Services update

Greetings to our much missed readers! We write to provide an update on our activities and a summary of library services currently available from the Bodleian Libraries.

The Continuing Education Library is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Although we do not currently have a date for re-opening the Library, we do expect to be open in time for Michaelmas (Autumn) Term.   Please check back here for more information about re-opening dates.

In the meantime, Library staff are working from home. Please do contact us with any queries that you have by emailing library@conted.ox.ac.uk   We can generally help with:

  • access to e-books, journals and databases (for students with a full University card)
  • advice on obtaining scanned copies of library materials
  • queries about Bodleian Libraries services (described in more detail below)
  • reference and bibliographic enquiries

In addition, some of the larger Bodleian Libraries are now offering scanning and “click and collect” services that you may be able to use.  Please see the information on “Bodleian Libraries Services” below for more information.

Continuing Education Library staff are working hard on a range of tasks and services (see FAQ for more information) and in particular are planning for the safe reopening of our library to staff and readers as soon as we possibly can.   We will provide updates on our progress via this blog and our library website. In the meantime, if you have any questions please do contact us – we’re always happy to help.

Bodleian Libraries Services

In recent weeks, the Bodleian Libraries have launched a number of services to aid readers working ‘remotely’. A summary of these is provided below.

Scan & Deliver (Offsite Scan)

If you hold a valid University card (issued to Continuing Education students enrolled on undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses) or a Bodleian Libraries’ reader card (issued by the Bodleian Admissions Office) you can use the Scan and Deliver service to request scans of book and journal extracts* from material held in the Bodleian Library offsite storage facility. The service is limited to two requests per person per day, but is free of charge.  For more information please see the Scan and Deliver service page on the Bodleian Libraries website.

*[1 chapter from a book or 10% of the book whichever is greater; 1 article from a journal issue or 10 % of the issue, whichever is greater]

Scan & Deliver (enhanced service) LibraryScan

In order to mitigate the effects of closure of libraries to readers, the Bodleian Libraries have extended the scope of the Scan & Deliver service to provide scans of book and journal extracts* from material held on open shelves in some of the larger libraries within the Bodleian Libraries system, including the central Bodleian, the Sackler Library, the History Faculty Library, the Social Science Library and the Taylorian. This service is limited to University card holders; a Single Sign-On username and password is required. As with the offsite scanning service, this service (known as LibraryScan) is limited to two requests per person per day, but is free of charge. For further information please see the  Scan and Deliver service page on the Bodleian Libraries website.

*[1 chapter from a book or 10% of the book whichever is greater; 1 article from a journal issue or 10 % of the issue, whichever is greater]

Click & Collect

Some of the larger Bodleian Libraries are offering a carefully managed ‘click & collect’ service to allow readers to request books for collection at an arranged date and time. This service is limited to University card holders; a Single Sign-On username and password is required. For further information, including a list of participating libraries, please see the Click & Collect page on the Bodleian Libraries website.

Book return ‘hubs’

If you have Continuing Education Library books on loan we encourage you to keep hold of them for the time being if you can. All loans have automatically been renewed until 12th October. If you prefer to return your books before that date, please refer to the loan returns page of the Bodleian Libraries website which lists the locations (‘hubs’) to which you can safely return books. Please note that you can return Continuing Education Library books to any of the Bodleian Libraries return hubs but that Rewley House itself is NOT a returns hub.

If you have finished your study in the Department for Continuing Education and are not able to return to Oxford to drop off your books then you may be able to use a free postal service for returning books (see the loan returns page for more information).   However, if you are returning to your studies in Oxford later this year we would prefer you to hang on to your books for now rather than using the postal service which is only intended for those who are not returning to Oxford.

Frequently asked questions:

When will the Library re-open?

The Continuing Education Library is currently closed due to the COVID 19 pandemic.  Although we do not currently have a date for re-opening the Library, we do expect to be open in time for Michaelmas (Autumn) Term.   Please check back here for more information about re-opening dates.

Why has the library not reopened yet?

Library staff are keen to reopen as soon as possible. However, planning for a safe reopening of the library to staff and readers is a complex process and one which Oxford University is taking very seriously with work taking place across many buildings throughout the city.  The Continuing Education Library will be considered in this process as part of Rewley House.  We are working closely with the Department to ensure that we are ready to open the Library once the building re-opens.

Will the Continuing Education Library offer a scanning and/or a click & collect service?

When staff are able to return to the Library we will offer a scanning service. In the meantime, if you are a member of the University (for example on an undergraduate, postgraduate or research programme) or a Bodleian card holder please bear in mind that you can request scans from the Bodleian stack and from some other Bodleian Libraries using the scan and deliver service (see Scan and Deliver).

If the book you need is not in any of the Libraries that are offering scan and deliver please do get in touch with library@conted.ox.ac.uk as we may be able to source a scan from elsewhere.

We hope to offer click and collect once public access to Rewley House is restored in accordance with safety protocols.    Again if you are a member of the University you may be able to order books using click and collect from the larger Bodleian Libraries which are already offering this service.  For details see Click & Collect

I don’t have a University card or a Bodleian Reader card. What services can I use?

As noted above, the Bodleian Libraries scanning service is currently restricted to University card (and Bodleian card holders for offsite scan).   Click & collect services are currently also restricted to University card holders. However, if you do not have one of these cards you can still access a range of ‘open-access’  online material via SOLO. For more information please see our earlier post

I had a Continuing Education Library card because I was enrolled on a weekly class before lockdown; what should I do about the books I have on loan?

Continuing Education Library cards are issued by the Continuing Education Library staff for the duration of the short course ( e.g. 10 or 20 weeks) for which you have enrolled. In some cases therefore your membership will have expired. As noted above, your Continuing Education Library loans will have been automatically renewed until the 12th of October, even though your membership may have expired. Please hold on to your books until then if possible; however, should you wish to return them before the due date, please see return options on the Bodleian Libraries website. It is not currently possible to return books to the Continuing Education Library because Rewley House remains closed. If you wish to be reminded of the details of the books you have on loan, please contact us.

Please note that you do not need a valid Continuing Education card in order to continue to access the ‘open-access’ online resources via SOLO; these ‘open-access’ resources are available to anyone with an internet connection.

What are the Library staff doing whilst they are working from home?

Library staff are working hard on a range of tasks from home including

  • answering your queries
  • planning for the safe reopening of our library to staff and readers as soon as we possibly can
  • purchasing e-books for the coming term
  • obtaining digitised material (scans) to support next term’s classes
  • creating online ORLO reading lists
  • preparing online guides and tutorials to help students make the most of the Library
  • supporting the Bodleian Libraries services including Live Help, ORLO reading lists and behind the scenes work on scan and deliver.

How can I get help?

We are here to support your research and answer your queries ( or if you’d just like to say hello!)  Our email address is library@conted.ox.ac.uk Thank you for your patience as we work towards an expansion of our services.
