Oxford has moved to National Tier 2: will library services change?

In line with Bodleian Libraries policy, we have no plans to make changes to our current services. We would like to reassure our readers that we have rigorous control measures in place to remain COVID-secure. Please do contact us library@conted.ox.ac.uk  should you have any concerns, or require further information.

We continue to offer the following Bodleian Libraries services, open to University members

Click & Collect

Book a study space

Scanning services

If you are enrolled on a short course run by the Department for Continuing Education (e.g. WOW) please see our guide which explains how to access Click & Collect services and book a study space in the Continuing Education Library.

Rewley House Library services for Michaelmas Term

The Rewley House Library is open for

  • Scanning – Library staff can scan chapters and articles to send to you by email
  • Borrowing through ‘click and collect’
  • Returning books
  • Studying in the reading room (please book a place)

You will find more information about each of these services together with opening hours and information about COVID safety in the Library below.

In order to protect students and staff the numbers in the Library are being very carefully controlled and so you must book a place every time you want to use the Library – unfortunately it is not be possible to simply drop into the Library without a booking.   The only exception to this is if you are simply returning books and do not need to use the Library for any other purpose.   Of course, having to book a place will take some getting used to but the restrictions are there to protect students and staff by limiting the numbers of people in the Library at any one time and ensuring social distancing.    Please note that we anticipate that everyone who wants to, will be able to use the Library but the booking system will ensure that people are distributed throughout the day rather than concentrated in short time periods.

Click and Collect

You may borrow books through our ‘Click and Collect’ service.  To use the service first order your books in SOLO.  Once your books are ready for collection, we will email you to ask you to choose a collection date and time from a wide range of available slots. Here are some instructions

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books
  2. When you have found a book that you’d like to borrow, click on the name of the Library (for example Continuing Education Library)
  3. Click on the green ‘request’ button
  4. You will be prompted to ‘send your request’
  5. Library staff will then fetch the books that you have requested
  6. Once the books have been fetched, you will receive an email inviting you to choose a collection date and time.  A wide range of options are available.

What to do if you don’t see the “Request” button  – If you don’t see the request button in SOLO please contact library@conted.ox.ac.uk for help.  Please include your full name.

Library Scan (for undergradautes, postgraduates and others with Oxford University cads)

You may request scans of book chapters and articles for delivery by email.  Due to copyright restrictions you may only request one chapter or 5% of each book and one article from each journal issue.   This can be challenging, particularly if you are not sure of the contents of the book.  However, you can often find tables of contents of books online (for example try Googling the name of the book and the word contents).   Viewing the table of contents online can help you to decide which chapter to request.    Alternatively, please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will send you a scan of the table of contents to help you to decide.

To order your scans

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books or articles
  2. If the item that you’d like scanned is in the Bodleian closed stack, click ‘Offsite scan’ to place your scan request
  3. If the items is in another Library (including the Continuing Education Library) click ‘LibraryScan’ (this button appears in the set of red icons above the list of libraries)
  4. Fill in the form with details of the chapter or article you require
  5. The scan will be sent to you by email.

LibraryScan for WOW and online short course students  – We are not able to routinely offer the scanning service to WOW or short course students and instead supply scans to the whole class through your virtual classroom or course site. However, if you particularly need a scan please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will help if we can.

Returning books

You can return your books to the Continuing Education Library without a booking. Please put them in the book returns box which is now situated just inside the door of the main library (it is no longer in the reading room).  Alternatively you can return books to a Bodleian Libraries returns hub, the Library can provide you with a paid envelope to return your books by post or we can arrange for a courier to collect books from your home.   Please find more information at https://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/using/loanreturns

COVID safety.  Please note…

  • To ensure social distancing booking is essential –  Whilst booking a place in the Library is inconvenient, requiring bookings allows us to control the number of people in the Library at any one time.   For example each 15 minute “click and collect” slot can only be booked by 2 people.
  • Access to the book shelves in the upper and lower library is limited to Library staff at the moment. We hope that limited shelf browsing may be possible later in term but initially all books must be ordered via ‘click and collect’
  • Self-service printing, photocopying and scanning are not currently available. These facilities may be re-introduced later in term. In the meantime you can request free scans via LibraryScan (see above)
  • Library staff are following strict hygiene protocols including wearing face coverings and frequent hand washing and sanitising.   You will also be asked to observe safety protocols such as hand sanitising and wearing a face covering (unless exempt)
