Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to study inside the Rewley House Library or most other Bodleian Libraries. However, study spaces are being provided at a small number of libraries. Please find more detailed information and booking instructions below.

Hathi Trust Online Emergency Library

We now have access to the HathiTrust Emergency Library which is an online collection of 1.5 million “in copyright” (i.e. modern) books and a further 4 million public domain books.    It covers a good proportion of reading list books and I hope will be a boon to those who are unable to travel to Oxford Libraries.

To access HathiTrust please go to SOLO as normal and log on with your Oxford Single Sign on (SSO) username and password.   HathiTrust items display an on orange “Full Text via HathiTrust” logo. Click on the logo to connect.

Once connected to HathiTrust, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link ‘temporary access’ which you will find towards the bottom of the page under the heading ‘Viewability’

Then choose “Check Out“. You will then be able to read the book on screen,

Click and Collect

You may borrow books through our ‘Click and Collect’ service.  To use the service first order your books in SOLO.  Once your books are ready for collection, we will email you to ask you to choose a collection date and time from a wide range of available slots.  You will collect your books from just outside Rewley House (Old Front Door Entrance).   Please telephone us on 01865 270454 when you arrive and we will bring your books out to you.

Here are some instructions

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books
  2. When you have found a book that you’d like to borrow, click on the name of the Library (for example Continuing Education Library)
  3. Click on the green ‘request’ button
  4. You will be prompted to ‘send your request’
  5. Library staff will then fetch the books that you have requested
  6. Once the books have been fetched, you will receive an email inviting you to choose a collection date/time with a link to follow to make your booking
  7. Choose “Select date and time” and choose a date/time that suits you,
  8. Choose “Submit booking” and fill in the details as appropriate
  9. At your chosen collection time, please come to Rewley House and go to the back door of the building, which is off Wellington Square, around the corner from the front entrance of Rewley House ( see map below)  When you arrive please telephone the Library on 01865 270454 from outside of the building.  Library staff will bring your books to you outside.  The books will already be issued to your account and will be in a carrier bag so that you can easily take them home.  Please wear a face covering unless you are exempt.

What if I miss my booking slot? If you miss your booking slot or need to change it please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk or telephone 01865 270454. This is more important than previously because the Library will only be staffed for part of the day (and therefore if you come much later than your appointment, there may not be anyone available on site).

What to do if you don’t see the “Request” button  – If the item is available via HathiTrust then it will not be available via “click and collect”. This is because for copyright reasons we are unable to lend books which we are making available via HathiTrust.  If this is particularly problematic for you please contact library@conted.ox.ac.uk

If the book is not available via HathiTrust and you don’t see the request button in SOLO please contact library@conted.ox.ac.uk for help.  Please include your full name.

Library Scan (for undergraduates, postgraduates and others with Oxford University cards)

You may request scans of book chapters and articles for delivery by email.  Due to copyright restrictions you may only request one chapter or 5% of each book and one article from each journal issue.   This can be challenging, particularly if you are not sure of the contents of the book.  However, you can often find tables of contents of books online (for example try Googling the name of the book and the word contents).   Viewing the table of contents online can help you to decide which chapter to request.    Alternatively, please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will send you a scan of the table of contents to help you to decide.

To order your scans

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books or articles
  2. If the item that you’d like scanned is in the Bodleian closed stack, click ‘Offsite scan’ to place your scan request
  3. If the items is in another Library (including the Continuing Education Library) click ‘LibraryScan’ (this button appears in the set of red icons above the list of libraries)
  4. Fill in the form with details of the chapter or article you require
  5. The scan will be sent to you by email.

LibraryScan for WOW and online short course students  – We are not able to routinely offer the scanning service to WOW or short course students and instead supply scans to the whole class through your virtual classroom or course site. However, if you particularly need a scan please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will help if we can.

Returning books

As the building is closed you will now need a booking to return your books.  To do this you will book a “collection” space even if you are not collecting books!   To do this

  1. Go to https://tickets.ox.ac.uk/webstore/shop/viewItems.aspx?CG=CEDBL&C=CEDBL
  2. Choose “Select date and time” and choose a date/time that suits you,
  3. Choose “Submit booking” and fill in the details as appropriate
  4. At your chosen booking slot, please come to Rewley House and go to the back door of the building. This door is located off Wellington Square, just around the corner from the Rewley House front entrance (see map above).  When you arrive please telephone the Library on 01865 270454 from outside of the building.   Library staff will then meet you to pick up your books

Are there other options for returning my books? There are some other options for returning books including returning to a Bodleian returns hub (which do not require) booking and returning by pre paid post or courier (paid for by Bodleian Libraries). Please see https://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/using/loanreturns for more information.

Booking a study space in a hub library

Bodleian Libraries is making study spaces available to students with a blue stripe University card at some sites.  To take advantage of this you must book a place using the space finder.

6 January update: “Click and collect” and Library Scanning services will continue during lockdown

Just a quick update to let you know that “click and collect” and “LibraryScan” are continuing.   Some of you have noticed that the “request” button has disappeared from SOLO, so that it is not currently possible to request books. This was removed temporarily and will be reinstated soon.

The services on offer remain broadly the same as those listed in the post below. However, books that you have ordered via “click and collect” will be collected from outside the entrance to Rewley House rather than from inside the Library. The way this will work is that you will book a collection slot online as normal. When you arrive you will phone the Library and we will bring your books out to you. The books will already have been issued and will be in a bag so it will be a quick handover.

Information about returning books will be updated soon.

January 2021- Library Services at Rewley House and other Bodleian Libraries

Since Oxford is now in tier 4, it is no longer possible to study in the reading room or at desks in the Continuing Education Library.  However, you may still borrow books from the Library using the “click and collect” service, place requests for articles and chapters to be scanned and contact the library with enquiries and book requests.

In addition, access to a vast array of scanned books and journals will soon be available from SOLO through the HathiTrust.   Access will be switched on to these materials in the next few days and requires an Oxford Single Sign on (SSO).   This service will be available to all undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff with an Oxford University card.

Library services at Rewley House

Bodleian Libraries is currently operating a zero contact service across most of its Libraries due to Oxford being in tier 4.   At this time you may:

  • Request books for collection via the “click and collect” service. Please note that  you must have a booking to “click and collect”.  When you come to collect your books, we will issue them to you and pass them to you to take home. You will not be able to read them in the Library.   Regrettably we can not take face-to-face enquiries when you come to collect your books and so please be sure to email or telephone us with any enquiries before you come to the Library.
  • order scans of chapters and articles using the LibraryScan service
  • return books to the Continuing Education Library during opening hours. It is also possible to return books to Bodleian Libraries return hubs or to send them by post or courier service (paid for by Bodleian Libraries).  More information below.
  • request purchase of books and ebooks by emailing library@conted.ox.ac.uk
  • contact library staff with enquiries about the library, printed or e-books, articles and other materials or referencing. You can contact us by email (library@conted.ox.ac.uk) by telephone (01865 270454) or we can chat on Teams or Zoom.   To arrange to chat on Teams or Zoom please email or telephone us to arrange an appointment.

There is more information about each of these services below.

Unfortunately it is currently not possible to:

  • Study at a desk in the Continuing Education Library
  • Browse the Library shelves
  • Order books from the Bodleian stack to the Continuing Education Library
  • Use the Library photocopiers, printers, scanners or computers
  • Ask face to face questions in the library – for all enquiries please contact us by email (library@conted.ox.ac.uk) or by telephone (01865 270454).  We can also arrange a one to one appointment on Teams or Zoom.

What about other Oxford University Libraries?

Students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses with “blue stripe” Oxford University cards, may use the 30 Libraries in the Bodleian Libraries group. All of these libraries are offering “click and collect” and scanning services (on the same “zero contact basis” as the the Continuing Education Library).

In addition, Bodleian Libraries is making study spaces available at the following sites. To take advantage of this you must book a place using the space finder:

  • The Sackler Library
  • The Old Bodleian Library
  • The Radcliffe Camera
  • The Social Science Library
  • The Radcliffe Science Library/Vere Harmsworth Library

You must book a space to study in these libraries using the space finder.  Unfortunately, you may only book a space if you have a blue stripe University card – it is not possible to book a place with a pink Continuing Education Library card.  We regret that we are not able to offer study spaces at Rewley House at this time.

Tier 4 – Changes to Rewley House Library services

Happy New Year!

With Oxford entering tier 4, Library services at Rewley House will be subject to some changes. In particular, it will no longer be possible to study in the Reading Room or elsewhere in the Continuing Education Library.  For the time being it will also not be possible to order Bodleian stack books to Rewley House. Some larger Libraries within the Bodleian group will continue to offer study spaces and stack requests.

We hope that “click and collect” and scanning services will continue to be available from Rewley House but details are yet to be finalised. Please check back here for more information.

Please continue to send enquiries and requests for e-books and scanned chapters to library@conted.ox.ac.uk (which will be checked from 4 January onwards).

More information will be provided here as soon as possible.
