Hathi Trust Online Emergency Library

We now have access to the HathiTrust Emergency Library which is an online collection of 1.5 million “in copyright” (i.e. modern) books and a further 4 million public domain books.    It covers a good proportion of reading list books and I hope will be a boon to those who are unable to travel to Oxford Libraries.

To access HathiTrust please go to SOLO as normal and log on with your Oxford Single Sign on (SSO) username and password.   HathiTrust items display an on orange “Full Text via HathiTrust” logo. Click on the logo to connect.

Once connected to HathiTrust, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link ‘temporary access’ which you will find towards the bottom of the page under the heading ‘Viewability’

Then choose “Check Out“. You will then be able to read the book on screen,

Library Scan (for undergraduates, postgraduates and others with Oxford University cards)

You may request scans of book chapters and articles for delivery by email.  Due to copyright restrictions you may only request one chapter or 5% of each book and one article from each journal issue.   This can be challenging, particularly if you are not sure of the contents of the book.  However, you can often find tables of contents of books online (for example try Googling the name of the book and the word contents).   Viewing the table of contents online can help you to decide which chapter to request.    Alternatively, please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will send you a scan of the table of contents to help you to decide.

To order your scans

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books or articles
  2. If the item that you’d like scanned is in the Bodleian closed stack, click ‘Offsite scan’ to place your scan request
  3. If the items is in another Library (including the Continuing Education Library) click ‘LibraryScan’ (this button appears in the set of red icons above the list of libraries)
  4. Fill in the form with details of the chapter or article you require
  5. The scan will be sent to you by email.

LibraryScan for WOW and online short course students  – We are not able to routinely offer the scanning service to WOW or short course students and instead supply scans to the whole class through your virtual classroom or course site. However, if you particularly need a scan please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk and we will help if we can.

Click and Collect

You may borrow books through our ‘Click and Collect’ service.  To use the service first order your books in SOLO.  Once your books are ready for collection, we will email you to ask you to choose a collection date and time from a wide range of available slots.  During the week of 19 April, you will collect your books from just outside Rewley House (back door).   Please telephone us on 01865 270454 when you arrive and we will bring your books out to you.  From 26 April onwards you will be able to come into the Library to collect your books.

Here are some instructions

  1. Log in to SOLO at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and search for books
  2. When you have found a book that you’d like to borrow, click on the name of the Library (for example Continuing Education Library)
  3. Click on the green ‘request’ button
  4. You will be prompted to ‘send your request’
  5. Library staff will then fetch the books that you have requested
  6. Once the books have been fetched, you will receive an email inviting you to choose a collection date/time with a link to follow to make your booking
  7. Choose “Select date and time” and choose a date/time that suits you,
  8. Choose “Submit booking” and fill in the details as appropriate
  9. At your chosen collection time, please come to Rewley House.
    1. During the week of 19th April you will need to go to the back door of the building, which is off Wellington Square, around the corner from the front entrance of Rewley House ( see map below)  When you arrive please telephone the Library on 01865 270454 from outside of the building.  Library staff will bring your books to you outside.  The books will already be issued to your account and will be in a carrier bag so that you can easily take them home.  Please wear a face covering unless you are exempt.
    2. From 26th April onwards please come into the Rewley House Library to collect your books.

What if I miss my booking slot? If you miss your booking slot or need to change it please email library@conted.ox.ac.uk or telephone 01865 270454. This is more important than previously because the Library will only be staffed for part of the day (and therefore if you come much later than your appointment, there may not be anyone available on site).

What to do if you don’t see the “Request” button  – If the item is available via HathiTrust then it will not be available via “click and collect”. This is because for copyright reasons we are unable to lend books which we are making available via HathiTrust.  If this is particularly problematic for you please contact library@conted.ox.ac.uk

If the book is not available via HathiTrust and you don’t see the request button in SOLO please contact library@conted.ox.ac.uk for help.  Please include your full name.

Browse and Borrow

You can book a 30 minute slot to browse the shelves in the Library. Use the Bodleian Libraries Space Finder to book your slot.

We hope you will find this to be a useful way to find books on your subject are available and to pick out books to borrow. However, please note that for copyright reasons we are are unable to lend copies of books which are currently being made available via the Emergency HathiTrust Library. Therefore

  • If there is a lending copy of a title in the Library but there is also a copy in the Emergency HathiTrust Library – we will NOT be able to lend the printed copy to you at this time
  • If there is a lending copy of the title in the Library but there is NOT access from the Emergency HathiTrust Library then you will be able to borrow the book

Please also note that you will not be able to access our PCAS (print, copy and scan services) during your visit.
