Hi Tim,
you can read about the history of The Nation in various publications about history of Irish newspapers, the founders and about the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848. Some suggested starting points include:
Marie-Louise Legg: Newspapers and Nationalism-The Irish Provincial Press 1850-1892. Four Courts Press, 1999
Malcolm Brown: The Politics of Irish Literature: from Thomas Davis to W.B. Yeats, Allen & Unwin, 1973.
Charles Gavan Duffy and others:The spirit of the Nation : 1845. Woodstock Books, 1988.
Rebecca O’Conner : Jenny Mitchel, young Irelander : a biography. O’Conner Trust, 1988
Brendan Ó Cathaoir (ed.): Young Irelander abroad : the diary of Charles Hart. Cork University Press, 2003.
Thomas Davis: the thinker & teacher, the essence of his writings in prose and poetry, selected and ed. by A. Griffith. 1914, but also other editions.
Search Historical Abstracts (via SOLO) for journals articles. E.g.
O’Connell, Maurice R.: YOUNG IRELAND AND THE CATHOLIC CLERGY IN 1844: CONTEMPORARY DECEIT AND HISTORICAL FALSEHOOD. in Catholic Historical Review; Apr1988, Vol. 74 Issue 2, p199-225, 27p
There are of course Wikipedia articles as well if you just want brief summary information, but I guess you already know about that or want something more scholarly or authoritative.
The Nation (Irish Newspaper): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nation_%28Irish_newspaper%29
Your Ireland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Ireland
All books mentioned above are held in Oxford so just search SOLO for the shelfmarks.
I only came across this website to day could you tell me more about The Nation as next year is the Bi centenary of the birth of Thomas Davis co founder of the Nation.
