Oxford Bibliographical Society talk 3 Feb @ 5.15pm: Digital Approaches to Manuscript Studies

On Monday 3rd February, 5:15pm, Taylor Institution, Dr Peter Stokes will give a talk at the Taylor Institution, exploring the problems and potential of digital approaches to manuscript studies. Particular attention will be paid to DigiPal, a new resource for the study of medieval handwriting.

Having lectured in palaeography and codicology at the University of Cambridge since 2004 and in digital publishing at the Institute of English studies since 2010, Dr Stokes’s principle research is the Digital Resource for Palaeography, Manuscripts and Diplomatic. This major project aims to bring digital technology to bear on scholarly discussion in new and innovative ways, combining digital photographs of medieval handwriting with detailed descriptions and characterisations of the writing, as well as the text in which it is found, and the content and structure of the manuscript or document as a whole.

Readers are invited to attend this talk in order to find out more about the innovative work carried out by Dr Stokes, whose research on bringing the methods and resources of digital humanities to bear on palaeographical exploration, citation and teaching provides valuable insight into the future of manuscript studies.
