Finding Brill Open Access monographs in SOLO: tips

As more and more monographs also become Open Access, our colleagues in the Bodleian Library are cataloguing those so they can be found and accessed via SOLO.

For instance, if you wanted to find Brill Open Access monographs in SOLO, then simply search for:

“brill online books and journals” “open access”

You can then use the facets on the side to explore which subjects are covered.

Look out for more Open Access monographs. They are freely available and, now that they are integrated into SOLO, should also be discoverable in addition to our purchased and Legal Deposit collections.

There are lots of courses coming up this term to help historians get the best out of the resources available at Oxford.

Week 1 (this week)

Social Media for Historians: effective online communication & career development (Wed 24 April 14.00-15.30) (wk 1)
This 1.5 hr course will demonstrate the range of social media tools which are increasingly used by individual historians, learned societies, libraries, to communicate and share information and research. The key tools which will be shown are: blogs, Twitter, academia.edu, Flickr, Delicious. They are also increasingly used to maintain an online profile and for networking. The session will show examples of other historians, allow for group discussion and practical play time. > Book now

Week 2 (next week)

During week 2 Bodleian Libraries will be running workshops on RefWorks and on finding a range of scholarly materials including journal articles, conference papers, theses and dissertations and library materials on SOLO.

WISER: Finding stuff – Journal Articles (Monday 29 Apr 9.45-11.15) – an introduction to finding journal articles to support your research and learning. We will focus on searching for articles by subject and keyword and will cover sophisticated bibliographic databases and journal indexes as well as more basic search engines such as the SOLO ‘Journal Articles’ services. The session will include time for you to practice using a scholarly database in your subject area. WISER: Finding Stuff – Conferences (Monday 29 Apr 11.15-12.15) – ever had difficulty tracking down a conference paper? This session introduces the secret art of tracking down conference proceedings and papers. In addition we will introduce tools for keeping up to date with up and coming conferences in your research area. RefWorks for Sciences and Social Sciences (Wednesday 1 May 2.00-5.30) introduces the main features of RefWorks including:adding references to RefWorks from a range of databases and online resources, inserting references into Word documents, formatting (and reformatting) references using citation styles and creating bibliographies. The sessions include plenty of opportunities for participants to use RefWorks. This session is designed for all members of Oxford University with an interest in reference management. WISER: Finding stuff – books etc on SOLO (Friday 3 May 9.30-10.30) – introduces SOLO for searching Oxford Libraries and effective ways of using SOLO to find books, journal titles and other library materials in print and online. The workshop will also cover placing “hold requests” for materials in the bookstacks, how to use your SOLO “MyAccount” for book renewals and other administration and using the SOLO e-shelf and alerts. Limited access to books in Bay 4 of Lower Camera

Between Monday 8^th April and Friday 12^th April, a series of works is being undertaken in Bay 4 of the Lower Camera. These preliminary surveys are necessary in the context of the proposed construction of a new entrance into Lower Camera in summer 2013.

Unfortunately, books and desks in Bay 4 will be temporarily inaccessible to readers during this time. However, library staff will provide a fetching service for books in the shelfmark range BR754 and BX2470. Please ask at the staff desk for access to these books. Staff will fetch books as quickly as possible for you.

If you know the books you will need in advance please do contact us.

We do not anticipate that the work will be noisy but earplugs are available from the staff desk and alternative seating provision may be found in the Upper Camera, Gladstone Link or over in the Old Library.

Information skills sessions for students and academics

This term there are a variety of workshops open to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers and academics at Oxford University. Here are the WISER information skills courses coming up next week and some courses specifically for historians that are coming up over the term. Spaces on courses are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Courses specifically for Historians

RefWorks for Historians (Fri 1 Feb 11.00-13.00) (wk 3)
RefWorks is an online tool which allows you to manage your references, insert them into your work, automatically generate bibliographies and easily switch between citation styles.
Who is this session for? Any students, researchers or academics interested in using the RefWorks

Mapping for Historians (Wed 20 Feb 14.00-15.30) (wk 6)
This session will introduce you to the Bodleian’s 1.3 million maps and atlases — how to find material in the collection and use it in your research. It will also touch on the use of GIS to make your own maps to include in your written work, covered in more detail in Week 7.

ArcGIS Workshop for Historians (Wed 27 Feb 14.00-17.00) (wk 7)
This practical session provides an introduction to the use of GIS in historical research and analysis. It will focus on making historical maps of study areas, using symbology (colour coding etc.) to encode historical statistics and other information and extracting geographical data from scans of historic maps.

WISER: Your thesis, copyright and ORA (Fri 1 Feb 15.45 – 16.45) (wk 3)
Oxford DPhil students are required to deposit a copy of their thesis in ORA (Oxford University Research Archive). This session will focus on copyright and other issues that DPhil students need to take into account when preparing and writing their thesis so that they do not encounter problems when they deposit. DPhils are encouraged to attend this session early so that they can make sensible decisions regarding rights from the start of their research.

Closed stack material book deliveries cancelled this afternoon

Due to worsening weather conditions, the deliveries of closed stack material to reading rooms this afternoon have been cancelled. This means that requested material will not be delivered until Monday 21 January at the earliest.

Remember, when an item has been requested from the closed stacks, the reader who placed the request will be emailed when the item is ready for them to consult in the reading room. More information about how to place stack requests and track their delivery is available in the SOLO LibGuide.

Green shelf slips for Gladstone Link Books

A new system of green shelf slips has been set up in the Gladstone Link area of the Bodleian Library.

If you take a book from the shelves to use, please:

fill in the slip legibly
put the slip on the shelf in place of the book

If you take a book which has been in use from a book return trolley, please put a new slip with your details on the appropriate shelf. This slip system has been introduced in the Gladstone Link in response to reader feedback.

History Faculty Library books may be borrowed by current members of Oxford University from the Lower Camera Reserve Desk.

Bodleian Library books, with the exception of the Personal Development Collection, cannot be borrowed from the Gladstone Link and should not be removed from the library.

HFL books on the move

HFL books being reclassified

The History Faculty Library books are on the move again. A team of reclassification staff have started to move books that are already in the Library of Congress Classification into their final positions. This means that books with shelfmarks A to DA175 are now in the Lower Radcliffe Camera, as are oversize books from A to N. These books can be browsed, used in the library and also borrowed by University members.

The books are still showing as being held in the Gladstone Link rather than the Lower Camera on the SOLO library catalogue, but this should be updated by Monday (17 September).

Further work until 12 October

More material will be moved during the project, which is due to finish on 12 October. Further details of areas being worked on will be posted on this blog next week.

If you are unable to access an area of books because they are being worked on by reclassifying staff, please search for an alternative copy using the SOLO library catalogue. If you cannot find an alternative copy, please ask library staff at the Lower Camera Reserve Desk for assistance.
