New: British Periodicals II

Oxford users now have access to part 2 of British Periodicals:

“British Periodicals traces the development and growth of the periodical press in Britain from its origins in the seventeenth century through to the Victorian ‘age of periodicals’ and beyond. On completion this unique digital archive will consist of almost 500 periodical runs published from the 1680s to the 1930s, comprising six million keyword-searchable pages and forming an unrivalled record of more than two centuries of British history and culture.

To date this resource provides access to the full-text of nearly 460 British popular and literary periodicals published from the 17th century to the early 20th century. It includes amongst others the Anti-Slavery Reporter, London Review, Royal Magazine or Gentleman’s Monthly Companion, some religious titles such as The Wesleyan-Methodist Magazine. Topics covered include literature, philosophy, history, science, music, architecture, drama, the fine arts and the social sciences.”

New: Making of Modern Law

We are pleased to announce that Oxford now has access to Making of Modern Law which is relevant to legal historians but also has content for social historians for 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Making of Modern Law comprises over 21,000 works from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on British Commonwealth and American law. It covers nearly every aspect of law, encompassing a range of analytical, theoretical, and practical literature, some very rare. The monographs and materials in Legal Treatises include casebooks, local practice manuals, books on legal form, works for lay readers, pamphlets, letters, and speeches. The collection covers domestic and international law, legal history, business and economics, politics and government, national defence, criminology, religion, education, labour and social welfare, and military justice.

Parliament Rolls of Medieval England (PROME) on British History Online Premium

The Institute of Historical Research has started adding the Parliament Rolls of Medieval England to British History Online Premium which Oxford subscribes to. This resource “contains the full text and translations of the meetings of the English parliaments from Edward I to Henry VII, covering the years from 1272 to 1504. It will be cross-searchable with all the other material on the site, both free and premium, all digitised to the same high standards.”

PROME provided by Scholarly Digital Editions additionally includes images of manuscripts and functionality to inspect those as well as introductory essays.
