UN Rule of Law website

The Rule of Law Unit of the UN launched its own website in November 2009.

Hompage of UN Rule of Law

The Unit (its full title is the Rule of Law Coordination and Resource Group) was set up in 2006 with 3 projects in mind: to ensure coordination and coherence among UN entities engaged in rule of law activities; to develop system-wide strategies, policy direction and guidance for the Organization’s activities in promoting the rule of law; and to enhance partnerships between the United Nations and other rule of law actors (A/63/226, A/63/154, A/64/6). To further these aims the Unit acts as a repository for the Organization’s rule of law materials and reports on best practice.

The website has 2 search screens and although I don’t have great

Advanced Search Screen

experience with this website, I would imagine the advanced search screen, with its drop down menus to limit your search, will be the more useful.

The Browse page is one way of exploring what this online database currently hosts in your particular sphere of interest.

Browse option expanded to show constitution making material

Of course some sections of the library are much bigger than others – and many of the items in this database may well be accessible via other UN sites, but the subject focus should ease the frustration that can sometimes be had searching mega sites.

Of course, the web pages are not just a repository – there are plenty of pages to be read and a positive plethora of links to follow up. There is even a section of links to help  graduate students apply for an internship  … Geneva, Vienna, New York anyone?
