While you’re away from Oxford, we have a wealth of online resources to enable you to continue your studies remotely.

SOLO

You can access the full text of many resources via SOLO when logged in with your Single Sign-On (SSO) ID – look for the green Online access icon to find these.

If a book you need is not available as an e-book, then we may be able to purchase one – complete the book recommendation form to put in your request.

BrowZine

BrowZine is a tool that brings together online journals from multiple publishers and platforms. It allows seamless access to content licensed by the Bodleian Libraries including 1000s of articles and 100s of platforms. It has been integrated with SOLO so with one click you can

  • Download a PDF of the article
  • Go to the article on the web
  • View the contents page of the that journal issue

If you prefer to access content on your phone or tablet you may prefer to use the BrowZine app. This can be downloaded from the Android and Apple App Stores and can be used on All iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches with iOS v8.x+ ; Android Tablets and Smartphones with OS v4.1+ and on Kindle Fire HD Tablets.

Getting the app is very easy. Simply,

  • Download the BrowZine App from the app store for your device
  • Choose Library (select University of Oxford)
  • Login with your Single Sign On (SSO)
  • And start browsing 100s of journals

UpToDate subscription expiry

The UpToDate subscription will expire on 31 July and due to the very high cost it has unfortunately not been possible to renew the subscription.

If you use UpToDate to log and redeem CPD points as evidence of your personal CPD, it is important that you download these CPD points before that date if you would like to evidence them in your portfolio. Instructions on how to do this are available on the Bodleian Libraries website.

Service disruption as a result of changes to library systems, 16-23 August 2022

The University of Oxford’s libraries are switching to a new system during summer 2022. While we move our data, some services will be reduced or unavailable between 16 to 23 August (inclusive). All services will resume as normal on 24 August.

The Bodleian Libraries will have a coordinated approach to reduce the impact of these disruptions as much as possible. We thank you for your patience while our library system is upgraded.

New online reference resource – Bergey’s Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria

We are pleased to announce that Oxford University members now have access to the online version of Bergey’s Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria (BMSAB). This is a microbiology reference work aimed at undergraduates, graduate students and researchers. Bergey’s offers the most complete and authoritative published description of bacterial and archaeal diversity. Now available online for the first time, this edition contains over 1, 750 articles providing descriptions of the taxonomy, systematics, ecology, physiology and other biological properties of all described prokaryotic taxa. Further information about the book is available via the publisher’s website.

Enhanced eresources provision in science and medicine

The Bodleian Libraries provide access to a wealth of ebooks and ejournals, but also has a range of online materials which provide more than standard text-based resources. Here are some of the multimedia and data resources we have which are of interest to students and researchers in the sciences and medicine.

Digimap

This on-line service will enable you to view and download Ordnance Survey (OS) digital data as electronic maps.

Multimedia Fluid Mechanics Online

This online tool includes nearly 1,000 videos, virtual labs, and simulations on fluid mechanics. Topics covered include kinematics, dynamics, interfacial phenomena, similarity and scaling, boundary layers, turbulence and control volumes.

O’Reilly (formerly Safari Books Online)

This package includes ebooks, videos, learning paths and case studies in the field of computer science.

Smithsonian Physical Tables

Originally published by Smithsonian Institution Press, this classic reference source comprises 901 tables of common physical and chemical data. The information provided is broad in scope, and is of general interest to scientists and engineers.

SPIE Digital Library 

The SPIE (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers) Digital Library is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics, and contains video presentations as well as peer-reviewed journal articles, ebooks and conference proceedings.

Birds of the World

Birds of the World brings together content from key works of ornithology (Birds of North America, Handbook of Birds of the World, Neotropical Birds and Bird Families of the World) with millions of bird observations from eBird and multimedia from the Macaulay Library.

JSTOR Global Plants 

JSTOR Global Plants aggregates content of interest to those working the in the fields of plant sciences, botany and ecology as part of the Global Plants Initiative (GPI). Content includes images, illustrations, correspondence and a searchable database of over 700,000 plant type specimens.

TAIR – The Arabidopsis Information Resource

TAIR maintains an extensive database of genetic information related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The resource collects together genome sequence and map data, gene product information, information on seed stocks and extensive links to the published literature and additional online Arabidopsis resources.

Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy

This 3 dimensional online version of Robert Acland’s atlas shows anatomy from fresh human specimens and real body movement. It includes a series of step-by-step video tutorials, a glossary, an A to Z index, and exam preparation self-testing.

ClinicalKey Student is an interactive education platform that supports students and faculty with tools tailored to develop and assess the medical knowledge. Henry Stewart Talks: The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection

Talks cover a wide range of biomedical science topics, including the design and analysis of randomised clinical trials, epigenetics, frontiers of research in autoimmunity, eurodegenerative diseases, stem cells and regenerative medicine, and psychopharmacogenetics.

Complete Anatomy

Complete Anatomy is a 3D anatomy platform for learning and teaching anatomy. The platform contains interactive structures (including a living, beating, dissectible human heart), radiological images, dynamic cross-sections, and over 1,500 clinical videos on cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, dentistry and fitness. It offers creative tools for virtual dissection.

The Bodleian Libraries now have a service called Browzine to provide easier access to online journal articles. BrowZine provides access to journals licensed by the Bodleian Libraries from compatible publishers from 2005 onwards. Articles can be accessed directly from SOLO or from the BrowZine website. There are also Browzine apps for Android and iOS, and a Chrome extension which provides links to full-text content of articles while searching the web.

Readers can save articles to a personal library, set up alerts for new issues of journals, and export articles to bibliographic management tools (including Mendeley and EndNote).

New Nature titles online
