Choosing and using software for referencing

Struggling with your in-text citations/footnotes or bibliography?

Keep on top of it all with reference management software. 

Not sure which package to use? Come one of our introductory sessions. We will give an overview of how reference management works, explore the pros and cons of a wide range of reference management packages and give you the opportunity to try out four different packages so that you can work out which one is best for you. The packages included are RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley.

Research tools for Medical Sciences

Did you know that Scopus searches far more journals than PubMed?    Do you know which are the highest impact journals in your discipline?  Are you keeping up to date with the latest publications in key journals?

As part of our ‘Research Skills Toolkits’ series in Week 1 we have two dedicated sessions for Medical Sciences on Wednesday 18th January and Friday 20th January.

Research Skills Toolkits are 2-hour workshops at which you have a chance to try out 10 different tools and skills which will help you in your research.
The Medical Sciences Toolkits will include the following:

  • Keeping up to date and current awareness
  • Searching for articles and papers on Scopus and Ovid databases
  • Finding highly cited journals and measuring research impact
  • Your thesis and ORA – essential information about copyright and sensitive data
  • Plagiarism and how to avoid it
  • Endnote for managing citations, inserting intext references/footnotes and creating bibliographies
  • Manipulating images using Gimp
  • Managing your thesis with Word
  • Podcasting with Audacity
  • Analysing data with Excel Pivot tables

Reference Management workshops in Trinity Term

Do you need to create in-text citations or footnotes or to build a bibliography?  If so, then reference management software can make the task much easier by helping you build libraries of references and add citations and bibliographies to your documents. In particular, reference management software can ensure that you have all the information you need for each citation or reference and that it’s formatted correctly for your chosen citation style.  It will even allow you to change citation style at the touch of a button!

Continuing on Friday 13th May with Zotero, Bodleian libraries offer a series of workshops that guide you through effectively using the most appropriate reference management software for your work. Please follow links to book online for each session.

Referencing: Choosing and using software (Tuesday 17th May 09:15-12:15; repeated Thursday 9th June 14:00-17:00)
This introductory session gives an overview of how reference management works, explores the pros and cons of a wide range of reference management packages and gives you the opportunity to try out five different packages so that you can work out which one is best for you. The packages included are RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, ColWiz and Papers.

Referencing: Zotero (Friday 13th May 09:15-12:15)
Zotero is a free, open-source program that can be downloaded as a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and as a standalone program that works with Windows, Mac, or Linux systems.

Referencing: RefWorks for Humanities (Wednesday 18th May 14:00-17:00)
RefWorks is a web-based reference manager provided free to members of Oxford University via the Bodleian Libraries’ institutional subscription.  You can log in to RefWorks using your Oxford Single Sign-On or you can create an individual account.
If you missed out on Referencing: RefWorks for Sciences and Social Sciences in Week 1, you may still come along to RefWorks for Humanities. The two sessions are similar although they use different examples in the demonstrations.

Referencing: Mendeley (Friday 20th May 09:15-12:15)
Mendely is a freely available reference manager and academic social network with web-based, desktop and mobile versions.  You can sync your library between these different versions and across different computers.
