A practical workshop to explore how to formulate search strategies to address research questions; choose appropriate databases and search engines; store and manage references; and keep up to date with new research.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the principles underpinning the conduct of literature searches for systematic reviews and evidence syntheses.

Bodleian iSkills for the Medical Sciences Division: Research impact – citation analysis tools
During this introduction to citation tracking and bibliometrics we will use a range of ‘impact factor’ tools to find top journals and conferences, count citations and measure the impact of publications and researchers. We will cover Journal Citation Reports, CiteScore Journal Metrics, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Essential Science Indicators, ORCID and more and explain how to use each tool and its strengths and weaknesses.

Moving from research question to literature review in the Social Sciences

Plan an effective and structured search for your dissertation or thesis.

A well-constructed set of search terms and an understanding of online search engines are prerequisites for maximising the amount, quality and relevance of resources you can identify for your literature review.  In this session researchers will use their own research questions to build a search and apply it to a range of databases. Techniques for structuring a search will be explained, an overview of key online resources for the social sciences will be given, major search tools will be explored, and strategies for approaching large results sets and sourcing papers will be discussed. This practical workshop will involve paper exercises and online activities using attendees own research topics.

Moving from research question to literature review in Archaeology

Are you a Postgraduate student in Archaeology?
Do you need to undertake a literature review as part of your dissertation or thesis?

We offer a FREE workshop to take you through the process – from looking at your initial research question to producing a literature review.

  •     Key databases and eResources
  •     Using citations and bibliometrics
  •     Using alerts

There will be a practical element, with a chance to have a go at these things with the Librarian there to help.  There will also be a workbook available to take away.
