How to find stuff in the library and online!

Next Tuesday we have four WISER sessions on “Finding Stuff”…

  • Finding books etc on SOLO
  • Finding journals articles
  • Finding theses and dissertations
  • Finding conferences

Each of these hour long workshops will introduce the main tools and techniques needed to find the specified items in Oxford libraries and online.    The four workshops work as a set and individually so you are very welcome to book for all four or  to dip in and out depending on what you want to find.  Please see more more information about each session and booking details below:

WISER: Finding Stuff – Books etc on SOLO  – This session will introduce SOLO as a tool for finding printed and electronic books, journals and other library materials in Oxford Libraries.    Although SOLO is quite easy to use, this session will introduce tips and techniques to help you to track down elusive titles quickly and to use SOLO as an effective tool for subject searching.  The presentation at this workshop will be quite short so that you have plenty of time to work on SOLO with help at hand.    This session will take place  Tuesday 22 February 9.15-10.15.  University members should book their place online. Other Bodleian Readers should email usered@bodleian.ox.ac.uk quoting their Bodleian Libraries card number.

WISER Finding Stuff: Articles – This session will cover effective searching of  databases for articles and papers for your research and learning.  We will focus on  how to find databases that are relevant to your subject area and  on good search technique.    During the hands on section you will have the opportunity to work through exercises on a number of  databases covering a broad range of subjects  or you can choose a database of your own to explore with help at hand.  This session will take place Tuesday 22 February 10.15-11.15.  University members should book their place online. Other Bodleian Readers should email usered@bodleian.ox.ac.uk quoting their Bodleian Libraries card number.

WISER Finding Stuff – Theses and dissertations will cover finding Oxford theses and those submitted at other institutions in the UK and abroad. We will cover searching SOLO and ORA for Oxford theses (including searching SOLO for theses by supervisor); Index to Theses and the British Library’s EThOS service for UK and Irish Theses and the database Dissertations and Theses for international theses.      The session will run on 22 February 11.30-12.30 allowing those who have attended the earlier sessions a 15 minute break before we start.   University members should book their place online. Other Bodleian Readers should email usered@bodleian.ox.ac.uk quoting their Bodleian Libraries card number.

WISER Finding Stuff – Conferences is the final session in this series and will concentrate on finding both forthcoming conferences and the published papers of conferences that have already taken place.  Conference papers can be very tricky to find and often cover cutting-edge research and so this is an essential session for anyone trying to keep up with the most recent research. University members should book their place online. Other Bodleian Readers should email usered@bodleian.ox.ac.uk quoting their Bodleian Libraries card number.
