Essential maintenance work to replace an air handling unit control panel is scheduled for Monday 15 – Friday 19 August 2022.  This means that some areas of the library may feel stuffier than usual during this time.

If you would like advice on alternative work spaces in the library that are unaffected by this work please ask library staff.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

On the morning of Monday 2 August a small part of the Reader PCs area will be inaccessible while some maintenance work takes place.

The first two desks of PCs including the Bloomberg and Eikon PCs will be moved up against the bookshelves and will be unavailable for use, along with a small section of the book collection.

The self-issue machine will still be available, as will the remaining desks of Reader PCs, including the height adjustable desk with PC; readers will need to walk around the bookshelves in order to access them.

Noise disturbance in Library: Mon 14 and Tues 15 December

A wooden surface with a variety of tools laid out on it, including a hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, Stanley knife, Alan keys, a drill and screws.

Essential maintenance work will be taking place next week in and adjacent to the Manor Road Building, which will unfortunately cause some noise disturbance in the library.

Monday 14 December: Electricial work to replace distribution boards will involve drilling directly above the Reader PC area.

Tuesday 15 December: Estates Services will be cutting access hatches for some of the building plant rooms. Sections of the floor will be taken out outside the building to the bike racks area and cut with an angle grinder during the day. This is estimated to last 10-15 minutes on 4 separate occasions throughout the day.

New LED lights in the SSL

Light fittings in the process of being replaced. New LED lights are visible above the bookshelves.

Work has recently started on replacing the fluorescent ceiling lights in the SSL with energy efficient LED lights.  The LED light fittings use less than half the amount of electricity when operating at 100% brightness.  Once all the lights are installed the brightness will be reduced to the optimal level and the lights will be connected to daylight sensors, so further energy savings are expected. The work is taking place outside of library opening hours to avoid any disruption to readers and it forms part of the Manor Road Building Facilities Team’s plan to improve lighting efficiency throughout the building.

Potential Noise Disruption (East and North Section of the Library): Thursday 13 April

There will be some noise disruption in the East and North section of the Library on Thursday 13 April, when work is taking place to vacuum the trench heating by the windows. The work will start before the Library opens, and will finish at 12 noon. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

During August and September 2015, new lights are being fitted to the main stairway in the Manor Road Building and scaffolding has been erected to facilitate this.

On Saturday 12 September, the scaffolding will be taken down and stored in the main atrium of the building. For safety reasons, the main automatic door to the Social Science Library will not be in use on this day. Entrance to the Library will be via the Fire Exit/Maintenance corridor halfway along the West side of the building. Signs will be placed on the exterior of the building to direct library users to this entrance.

The temporary entrance will be staffed by a member of the Manor Road Building Facilities team. Users of the Library should present their University/Bodleian Reader’s card when entering the library, and present their bags for inspection when leaving. Readers wishing to leave the library with books belonging to the Social Science Library, whether borrowed the same day or previously, should obtain a token from the library issue desk to indicate that the books in their possession have been checked by library staff. All normal library services will be available from the library issue desk.
