Online journals now displayed alongside our latest print journals

We have redesigned our Current Journals Display, located in the main aisle of the library – not only is it more colourful but we have also added a selection of our online journals.

Open Access journals are clearly identifiable and popular weeklies received in print (New Statesman, The Economist) are easy to find.

Our Current Journals Display provides a flavour of the titles received across the subject areas supported by the Social Science Library.  To check if we subscribe to a particular journal please search SOLO.

Box of Broadcasts: On Demand TV and Radio for Education

Box of Broadcasts is an on-demand TV and radio service for education. Whether you want to research current events, news from the past or documentaries, Box of Broadcasts provides a wide range of audio-visual possibilities. It allows members of subscribing institutions to search an archive of over 2 million broadcasts, record programmes from over 65 free-to-air channels, and create their own playlists and clip compilations.

Content includes BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, ITV, Channel 4, Film4, 10 foreign language channels and more.

 

Use the playlist tool to create and share a playlist or to keep track of your own research.

The clips tool can be used to make handy snippets for teaching.

 

Box of Broadcasts is available to current members of the University of Oxford. Access the resource via SOLO and log in with your Single Sign-On. The first time you access Box of Broadcasts you will be required to register for an account by entering your email address and name.

New database trial : Foreign Office Files for the Middle East, 1971-1981

The Bodleian Libraries are trialling a new resource until 1 March 2019; Foreign Office Files for the Middle East, 1971-1981.

Of interest to researchers in history, the Islamic World, economics, regional politics and international relations, this is an online collection of documents sourced from The National Archives, UK. It comprises formerly classified British government documents, including correspondence, annual reports, dispatches, maps, minutes of ministerial meetings and printed leaflets. The documents relate to a number of topics including the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the Oil Crisis, the Lebanese Civil War and the Camp David Accords, the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War.

New political database trials: let us know what you think

We have arranged trial access to two databases : Chatham House Online Archive 1920-2008, and Political Extremism and Radicalism in the 20th Century. Both databases are available through SOLO and will be of particular interest to researchers in International Relations, Politics, Global Governance and Diplomacy, Public Policy, International Development, Economics, Area Studies and more.

Chatham House Online Archive 1920-2008 is a searchable online database covering 88 years of the institute’s expert analysis and commentary on international policy. Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy institute based in London where world leaders and policy-makers are invited to discuss their views in an impartial environment. The online archive includes briefing papers, special reports, pamphlets, conference papers, monographs, as well as the audio recordings of Chatham House lectures and their fully searchable transcripts.

Political Extremism and Radicalism in the 20th Century is an online archive of briefing papers, reports, pamphlets and other publications from various Far-Right and Far-Left Political Groups in the US, Europe and Australia. Having this primary source material all together in one searchable database enables researchers to explore the origins and development of present-day issues, including the resurgence of right-wing politics, evolution of various civil rights movements and the nature of radical political thought.

The trial will last until until 31 October 2018 so if you have any feedback (good, bad or further suggestions) contact jo.gardner@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

Capital IQ

Capital IQ combines information on companies, markets, and people worldwide with tools for analysis, financial modelling, market analysis, screening, targeting, and relationship and workflow management.

As it is focussed on Business and Management, it is particularly useful for Economics and Management students and those researching financial sytems and data.

It is available through SOLO and OxLip+, University members can log in to Capital IQ on the PCs in the SSL Data Area. Just ask library staff at the issue desk to log you in.

Alternatively, University staff and students can request their own individual login by emailing the Sainsbury Library directly.  This login can be used outside of the library.

Introducing our new financial markets intelligence database: Eikon

We are pleased to announce that the SSL now has access to Eikon.

Eikon is a financial market intelligence database that replaces Thomson Reuters previous products ‘Datastream’ and ‘Thomson One’.

 

Eikon provides information on markets, indices, company and economic information and historical financial data. It provides access to trusted, up to the minute and accurate content from more than 5 million securities world-wide. Coverage includes Pricing Data, Research, Fundamentals, Financial Estimates, News and Charts.

 

  • Eikon has to be used on a single designated terminal in the Data Area of our Library.
  • It is available for use by current University of Oxford members only.
  • For access to Eikon, talk to a member of staff at our Issue Desk.

Free access to The Economist

Circle of a selection of copies of the Economist from 2017The Economist, the popular newspaper, is known for its opinions and analysis of international news, business, finance and politics. This popular publication is now available for free online through the Bodleian Libraries.

Follow the link in SOLO and you can view all issues from the original in 1843 to the latest 2017 issues. The link will also work outside the Bodleian Libraries, so you can access it from home or on the move.

Whether you’re a researcher or an undergraduate this resource will be useful to you.

New eResources on North Korea

  • Polling the Nations – a compilation of full-text questions and responses from over 14,000 national, state, and local surveys conducted since 1986 by more than 1,400 polling organisations in 100 countries. It is described by Choice as “a resource beyond compare in the polling field”.
  • NK Pro – an independent news, information and data platform that concentrates uniquely on North Korea. NK Pro features daily news, high level analysis, opinions and interviews from a range of scholars, diplomats, experts and North Korean defectors.
  • NK News – an independent, privately-owned specialist information source that focuses on North Korea. The site intends to provide authoritative news, opinion & analysis, research tools, data and subject specialists.

These tools will be useful for research on politics, international relations, conflict, and quantitative data analysis in the Social Sciences.

Vacation loans start during 8th week of Trinity term. For standard loans this will begin on Sunday 11th June and for short loan items it will begin on Thursday 15th June. Books will be due back on Tuesday 10th October (1st week of Michaelmas Term)
