Temporary disruption to PCAS print defaults on Library computers (Mon 25th June onwards)

The upgrade of our library computers to the Windows 10 operating system (taking place on Mon 25th and Tues 26th June) will affect their default print settings. Rather than black & white and double-sided, the default settings will be:

  • Colour
  • Single-sided

To offset the disruption, colour printing will be charged as black & white until a fix is provided. Prices for PCAS printing can be found here.

A guide can also be viewed here.

The default settings for printing from your laptop or other device via RemotePrint will remain unchanged, only printing from library computers is affected.

Please ask staff if you need any help with changing the settings and we apologise for the disruption to the standard service.

Leaving Oxford? Do not forget to use up your PCAS credit

PCAS is the system for photocopying, printing and scanning across the Bodleian Libraries.

Your PCAS account will end when your University card expires and remaining credit is non-refundable.

It is possible to transfer credit to another PCAS account if requested.

It will also be possible to transfer credit to a different card, e.g. alumnus status.

For credit transfer queries please email PCAS Support.

Whilst your University card is valid you can also use your PCAS credit to pay for Scan & Deliver, Bodleian Library Postal Photocopying and Inter-Library Loan requests.

SSL Photocopier availability on Tues 5th Sept due to software upgrade

On Tuesday 5th September, four of our five photocopiers at the SSL will be undergoing an essential software upgrade. The work will involve each machine being unavailable for approximately 1 hour, at some point during the day, whilst the upgrade is completed.

One photocopier will be available for reader use during the downtime and if required, staff can also assist with printing at our Issue Desk.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Finishing your degree this summer? Things to remember before you go

Here are a number of library related things to keep in mind as you prepare to finish your degree and leave Oxford.

Return all library books

If you have any books borrowed from university libraries please return them to the owning library before you leave. This will save on postage or return trips to Oxford (and fines!) later.

Book Donations

If you’ve got any of your own books you don’t need any longer, the library would be happy to receive donations of social sciences textbooks. A box is available at our Issue Desk for you to place them in.

Pay for outstanding fines and lost books

You can pay for all fines owed to any of the Bodleian Libraries in any Bodleian lending library. If you owe money for lost books you will need to visit the library that owns the book you have lost.

Alternatively you can pay for your fines and SSL books you may have lost via the online store. You will need to know the exact amount owed in each case, and you can find this out by signing in to SOLO and looking at “My Account”. If you are no longer able to sign in to SOLO, or have any questions please contact the library.

Use up your PCAS credit

Any unused credit on your PCAS account cannot be refunded and so we urge you to use it before you leave Oxford. On request, credit can be transferred to another PCAS account. Please email PCAS Support for assistance.

Your PCAS account will end when your University card expires.  It will be possible to transfer credit to a different card, e.g. alumnus status, and all enquiries should be sent to PCAS Support.

Alumni access to resources

Alumni access to selected resources is available. More information can be found on the Bodleian Alumni access to resources page. Go to the Oxford University Alumni webpage to register for an Oxford Alumni Card.

RefWorks Reference Manager

If you have registered for an individual RefWorks account you will have lifetime access to that account (for as long as we continue to subscribe). More information is available on the Bodleian Libraries’ RefWorks page.

Best of luck!

Whatever you are going on to do when you finish your studies at the University of Oxford, we wish you the best of luck.

The leaning tower of paper: easy ways to print less and help green the SSL

SSL staff with paper towerThis tower of paper, 2.19 metres tall, shows the amount of printing done on the Social Science Library’s five printer/copiers in October 2016.  That’s 21,752 sheets, in just one month.  If the tower hadn’t started to lean and we’d been able to add the paper used for photocopying, it would have reached 2.7 metres and consisted of 26,481 sheets.

We appreciate that printing and copying is essential for study and research but it is also one of the SSL’s main environmental impacts due to the consumption of paper, energy and ink (toner).  We have taken steps to reduce these impacts by using recycled paper, setting the printer/copiers to sleep after 10 minutes’ inactivity and recycling empty toner cartridges.  Printing from Reader PCs and PCAS RemotePrint is also double-sided by default.

Take a few seconds to think before you print – here are some easy things you can do to save paper, energy and ink, and spend less on printing and copying:

  • Do you need to print the document or could you read it on screen instead?
  • Are you printing a PDF in order to annotate it?  If so, have you considered annotating it on screen instead using the highlight and comment features in Adobe Reader?
  • Are you printing an article to keep for future reference?  You could save it to a USB memory stick or add a link to your reference manager instead.
  • Could you print two (or more) pages per sheet?  This will make the text smaller but if you can still read it this simple step will reduce your printing by 40%.  From the Reader PCs this option is accessed via the Print Properties then the Document Options tab.  See the PCAS guide on Printing from Library PCs.
  • Only print the pages, or selection, you need.  This is really quick and easy to do!
  • Fit more words on a page by narrowing the margins and using a smaller font.
  • Photocopy double-sided – use the PCAS Photocopying Instructions sheet next to each photocopier or ask staff to show you how.
  • Copy smart and avoid wasteful mistakes – refer to the PCAS guides, eg Copying different book sizes, or ask staff for advice.

Do you have any top tips for printing and copying less?  Email them to ssl@bodleian.ox.ac.uk or talk to staff and we will share them with others.

Library CardYour username is your University/Library barcode number (bottom right of your card)

How do I transfer credit from the old system?

For PCAS accounts created before 6/9/16 you will need to transfer any outstanding credit to your new account using the balance transfer portal available here. If you need assistance with this please email pcas@bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Xerox Photocopier

As part of the PCAS Upgrade, the Bodleian Libraries now have new photocopiers. We have placed “How to…” guides in the leaflet holders next to each of our photocopiers to help you learn how to use them.

Copies of the user guides are also available here.

Staff will also be happy to demonstrate them for you.
