This service enables on-screen read access to 1.5 million in-copyright items in the HathiTrust Digital Library, which have been verified as held in the Bodleian’s collection in physical form (in addition to approx. 4 million public domain items already available).

This service is available for Oxford University members only.

Keep up to date with the news: how to access our newspaper collections online

Want to keep up to date with world events? Want to do some research using past newspaper content? You can do both by accessing our extensive collection of online newspapers. Individual titles are accessible via SOLO and can be accessed remotely with a SSO (Single Sign On). An example of just some of the holdings in our collection can be viewed below:

Financial Times 1888 – 2016

Guardian 1821 – 2003

Observer 1791 – 2003

New York Times 1851 – 2015

Times 1785 – 2014

Note that these historical archives of the titles listed above, do not show the latest issues. To view more recent content, many newspapers are available to be browsed via the following databases:

Factiva

Largely for contemporary newspapers (1980s-). Provides essential news for the UK, America and Europe with a collection of more than 10,000 authoritative sources includes thousands of current newspapers. Excellent for national but also local, regional newspapers and specialist or professional news. There is much overlap with Nexis UK, (see below) so if you can’t find a newspaper in Factiva, then try there instead.

Nexis UK

Largely for contemporary newspapers (1980s-). Vast database that provides access to over 20,000 news sources from all over the world. Particularly excellent for UK, North American and much of Europe. Its coverage is largely current and recent, but does go back 20 years in some cases. For UK newspapers, generally covers broadsheets from 1980s and tabloids and local/ regional newspapers from more recently.

Further information about the Bodleian Libraries’ newspaper collections is available here.

Questions about library services or resources: Use the Live Chat service

Do you have questions about our library services or resources? Do you need assistance with tracking down materials you can access remotely? Use the Bodleian Libraries Live Chat service, available via SOLO, LibGuides or Bodleian Libraries contact pages. It is currently expanded to be available 7 days a week, 9am-7pm on weekdays and 10am-7pm on weekends. 70 library staff are keeping the service going remotely and staff Live Chat in 1 hour sessions. Introducing BrowZine: easy access to journal article PDFs

We are pleased to announce an enhancement to SOLO which improves access to PDFs of journal articles.

BrowZine gives you seamless access to online journals licensed by the Bodleian Libraries directly from SOLO or from the BrowZine website or app. Coverage is from 2005 onwards.

Via SOLO BrowZine seamlessly directs you straight to the article you want to view. You can then select ‘Download PDF’.

The BrowZine platform also easily allows you to browse journal contents by selecting ‘View Journal Contents’ (see image above). If you have not already done so, you will be asked to sign in with your SSO (Single Sign On).

You will also find in SOLO many electronic Legal Deposit (eLD) articles which now have links directing you to download the subscription copy instead of the more restricted eLD copy.

To search for articles and browse journal contents via the BrowZine website, select your institution (Bodleian Libraries (University of Oxford)) and you will then be prompted to sign in with your Single Sign On. Setting up a BrowZine personal account also gives you access to additional features:

  • You can save full text articles to a personal library
  • You can create a personal bookshelf of your favourite journals
  • You can save article citations to Mendeley, EndNote and other reference management software
  • You can share article citations via LinkedIn, e-mail, Twitter or Facebook
  • You can be alerted to new issues of journals

Click the image below to access 2 video tutorials to help you get started using BrowZine.

Further information can be found on the new BrowZine LibGuide or contact us if you require assistance.
