This pamphlet, written anonymously by Jonathan Swift, attacked Richard Steele’s The Crisis, which focused on the question of the Hanoverian succession. It included a passage on the Scottish lords (pp.22–24) which was denounced as ‘highly dishonourable and scandalous’ by Lord Wharton in the House of Lords in March 1714. As Lord Wharton discovered when he tried to read out this offending passage in the Lords, the pamphlet’s printer, John Barber, had produced amended versions in an apparent effort to forestall prosecution. The next picture shows the amended version.
