An overview of academic e-books looking at what is currently available in e-format, how to find and access e-books and how to make the most of e-book functionality.

New electronic resource: New: Records relating to the slave trade at the Liverpool Record Office

We now have access in Oxford to the online Records relating to the slave trade at the Liverpool Record Office (British Online Archives: British Records on the Atlantic World, 1700-1900) via SOLO and OxLIP+.

This full-text database provides access to one of the best collections in British archives of private merchants’ papers relating to the transatlantic slave trade. For more information, see the History Faculty Library blog.

WISER coming up: Mendeley and RefWorks

WISER logoNext week, Bodleian Libraries will be running workshops on Mendeley and RefWorks for reference management.

WISER: Mendeley for reference management (Tue 18 Feb 9.15 – 12.15) (wk 5)
Mendeley is a reference management package that helps you build libraries of references and then add citations and bibliographies to word processed documents.
Who is this session for? Postgraduates, researchers, academics and undergraduates wishing to use reference management software.

RefWorks for Humanities (Fri 21 Feb 9.15 – 12.15) (wk 5)
RefWorks is an online tool which allows you to manage your citations/references, insert them into your work as footnotes or intext citations, automatically generate bibliographies and easily switch between citation styles. This introduction is open to all, but the section on importing references will focus on Humanities examples.
Who is this session for? Postgraduates, researchers,  academics and undergraduates wishing to use reference management software.

Free access to Fold3.com Black History Collection in February

Fold3 Black History Month bannerIn recognition of Black History Month, Fold3.com has opened up all the records in their Black History Collection for free access until the end of February. You can access the records here or by clicking on the banner above.

Fold3.com is a website that makes available a vast number of digitised historical military records from the US National Archives and other sources, as well as various non-military records including census records, city directories, and newspapers. The Black History Collection contains documents of the American Colonization Society, inventories from South Carolina Estates, records from the Amistad court case, and a whole host of Civil War era records such as military service records and records of the Southern Claims Commission.
