University network upgrade this summer: effect on library services

Over the coming weeks, the University Computing Service is undertaking work to upgrade the University network. This will necessitate periods of scheduled downtime.

Networked library services may be unavailable, in some cases until 11.30am on:

SOLO, reader and staff workstations, wireless and Ethernet connections, and PCAS may be unavailable during the mornings. There may also be delays to the book service.

Local work affecting the Vere Harmsworth Library will be carried out on Tuesday 7 August. The networked services listed above may be unavailable in the Vere Harmsworth Library until 11am on this date. Again, this may cause delays to the book service on that morning.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this necessary work may cause.

Minor disruption to photocopying and printing, Wednesday 11th January

On Wednesday 11th January there will be some minor sporadic disruption to PCAS copiers throughout the Bodleian Libraries. This is due to background reconfiguration, and each device will need to be individually reset and tested by remote access. This will mean the copier will be unavailable for a few minutes whilst this is done.  If you find the photocopier is not working or is busy (with no user present), please try again in 5 minutes. Apologies for any inconvenience.

PCAS problems

If you’ve tried to print or photocopy in any of the Bodleian Libraries over the last few days, you may have noticed some problems with the PCAS system, in particular in the afternoons.   It can be very slow to recognise your card swipe or to print out pages.   The PCAS team are on the case and are working hard to fix the problems.  This may mean that they have to reboot the system on occasion, which will cause temporary disruptions.

The problems are particularly bad during the afternoons when a lot of people are using the system.   If your copying/printing is not urgent, you might want to consider waiting until the evening or coming back the next morning.

We hope that this will all be resolved soon and printing/copying will become a less frustrating experience!

Things to note for the new term

Welcome back to all our returning readers, and welcome to any new ones!  A couple of things to note as term gets underway:

1. Opening hours: From today we are open Monday-Friday 9am-7pm. No weekend opening until Trinity Term I’m afraid.

2. New printing/photocopying system: Over the summer, the Bodleian Libraries introduced a new system for printing, photocopying and scanning.  Payment is now handled via an online system, which is then linked to your University card.

How-to guides

3. Tour for new graduates: I will be running a tour of the VHL for new graduates in US Studies on Tuesday 12th October at 3pm.

Photocopying, Printing & Scanning: How-to guides

How-to guides for the new photocopying, printing and scanning system are now available to download from the Bodleian Libraries’ website, or can be viewed online from the following links:

All these guides are also available in the library, either as copies to take away or as reference copies by the photocopier and computers.

Print, Copy & Scan: new services, new procedures – starting today!

From today, the system for photocopying, printing, and scanning in the Bodleian Libraries (including here at the VHL) is changing.

Readers will have access to a range of new services across all Bodleian libraries: scanning, colour copies, self-service online accounts, discounted double-sided, print jobs that can be collected from any photocopier in any Bodleian library.  For VHL readers this means scanning and colour printing/photocopying will be available for the first time.

How do I use the new system?
How-to-guides are available in the library or from the Bodleian Libraries’ web page. I will also post them to the blog. You will need to set up an online account at https://bodleian.pcounterwebpay.com or click on the PCAS icon from any library PC workstation. Credit can be added to your account by using a credit or debit card.  As with the current system though, we will not be able to refund unused credit, so don’t go too crazy adding money!

The first time you use the photocopier after creating your account, you will need to link your library card to your account by following the instructions at the photocopier. After linking your card, you just need to swipe your card to pick up print jobs and access copying and scanning.

What will happen to credit on my existing photocopy card?
Once you have set up an account, library staff can transfer credit from the old system to your new account. Simply set up an account and present your old card to library staff. We will need your PCAS username to complete the transaction.

Print, Copy & Scan: new services, new procedures

From 9 August 2010, Bodleian Libraries are introducing a new system for photocopying, printing and scanning.   Readers will have access to a range of new services across all libraries: scanning, colour copies, self-service online accounts, discounted double-sided, and print jobs that can be collected from any photocopier in any Bodleian Library.

To use the new system, you will need to set up an online account, to which you can add credit using a credit or debit card.   When you first come to use the photocopier, your library card will be linked to this account.  Once linked, you will just need to swipe your card to pick up print jobs and access copying and scanning.  You will be able to set up your account from 9th August, and instructions on how to do so will be available then.

What will happen to credit on my existing photocopy card?
Once you have set up an account, library staff can transfer credit from the old system to your new account. Simply set up an account and present your old card to library staff. We will need your PCAS username to complete the transaction.

New photocopying payment system delayed

As you may be aware, a new system for photocopying and printing across the Bodleian Libraries was due to be introduced during the Easter vacation.   Unfortunately the change to the new system has had to be delayed and is now expected to take place over the summer.   We’ll update you further when we know more, but for now be assured that nothing is changing yet with the way you pay for your photocopying and printing in the library.

Changes to photocopying and printing coming soon

OULS photocopying and printing facilities will soon be changing. In January new services such as scan to email will be available and the way you pay will also be changing. We suggest you do not put too much credit on existing photocopy cards this term, and if you need to buy a new one, please note these now only cost 50p for the initial credit (ie, there is no longer any charge on the card itself).

Keep an eye out for new information over the next few months that will explain the changes in more detail!
