Coming soon! Additional shelving in Upper Gladstone Link

Additional book cases will be installed in the Upper Gladstone Link on Tuesday 8 July followed by a book move from Wednesday 9 to Tuesday 15 July.

There will be restricted access to the Gladstone Link via the Radcliffe Camera between 9am and 12noon on Tuesday 8 July. Access via the Old Library will be unaffected.

The new shelving units will increase capacity by approximately 65 meters, which will enable us to relieve shelving on the mobile Gladstone units and ease pressure on space in other areas of the collection. We are also able to increase the current space allocated to oversize items.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused by any disruption and noise while this project is taking place.

  • Sat. 21 Dec 10-4pm: LRR and URR will be OPEN. Duke Humfrey’s, Radcliffe Camera and GL will be CLOSED.
  • Sunday: All CLOSED.
  • Monday 23 Dec 9am-5pm. LRR will be OPEN. URR, Duke Humfrey’s, Radcliffe Camera and GL will be CLOSED.

Bodleian Library tea room – change in hours:

Due to low weekend demand during term time, the Bodleian Library tea room will unfortunately no longer open on Saturdays outside of the Long Vacation. We will still be open and welcoming readers as usual on weekdays. This change will take effect in the New Year, so the last day of Saturday opening will be 21 December.

Radcliffe Camera – south path now open

Some great news: the southern path of the Radcliffe Camera is now open for use. This also means that any readers coming from the High Street or University Church end can enter the Bodleian Library complex and History Faculty Library quickly. Within second of unlocking the new gate, students and academics were already exploring the new exit.

The landscaping on the sides will still have to be done, so watch this space.

Lower Camera – open and new entrance

I’m delighted to report that the Lower Camera and the brand new entrance from the south (opp. Vaults / University Church) are now open and awaiting your visit. When you come through the new entrance, you will need to swipe yourself in/out as in the Old Library.

The north door into RadCam is now closed. We can therefore permit free circulation of books between Upper Camera, Lower Camera, Gladstone Link and further afield from the Old Library. There are no bag searches anymore as we have book detectors in the right location.

The new enquiry desk is immediately at the entrance where you can seek help, collect your HFL holds, return / borrow books, etc.  The Self-Issue terminal is opposite.

The internal HFL book drop box is by the staircase leading to the Gladstone Link. The external book drop box (in the lobby of the entrance) will be put into commission soon. Watch this space!

Book deliveries to the Lower Camera will be possible from tomorrow evening. If you have placed any book orders from Swindon, then you pick those up from the shelves around the central console in Lower Camera. Read more about self-collect, which is already working well in the Lower Reading Room.

HFL lending books are now in LCam and Upper Gladstone Link only (excepting Local History collection which temporarily remains in LGL). Bodleian books formerly in UGL are now in Lower Gladstone Link. The HFL New Books Display is in Upper Gladstone Link. (Re-)check SOLO for correct location information and note a slightly different (and better) sequencing of the stock.

Lockers are now more visible and accessible in Upper Gladstone Link.

This is a summary of some of the most important changes we’ve done this summer. A few works will still need to be completed in the coming days, most importantly the path which will allow wheelchair access into the Lower Camera. However, we are delighted to have completed a whole range of improvements before the start of 0th week.

Thank you for your patience during this time and apologies again for any disruption to your work.

If you have any observations or feedback on the changes, please do feel free to email me.

IMPORTANT: access to Gladstone Link from Radcliffe Camera closed 20-30 September

Access to and from the Gladstone Link will be via the Old Bodleian Library and tunnel (note, in the event of a fire alarm or other emergency it will be possible to leave the Link via the Camera).

During this period the Upper Camera will be accessible from the usual Camera entrance but it will not be possible to go direct from the Upper Camera to the Gladstone Link.

The Library apologises for the short term inconvenience which relates to preparations for the new Camera entrance.

The light fittings will then be installed between Monday 16 September and Tuesday 24 September. Both periods will see brief closures of particular seating areas for one or two days.

Work to remove the old Lower Reserve counter will take place in week 29 July, though further work in this area may be needed. There will be no general route through the old Lower Reserve area on this date, though an evacuation route will be available in an emergency.
