HFL move: restricted to access to Bodleian Library’s Gladstone Link

Gladstone Link

During the period Monday 16 July – Friday 27 July and Monday 6 August – Friday 17 August inclusive, access to the Gladstone Link will only be possible via the Old Bodleian Library.

There will no access to the Gladstone Link from the Radcliffe Camera and likewise no access to the Radcliffe Camera from the Gladstone Link. However, this route remains available for use in the event of an emergency evacuation.

The restricted access is to enable the move out of less-used new academic material to the Book Storage Facility and the move in of History Faculty Library material following the closure of that Library at 5.30pm on Friday 3 August.

Areas of the Gladstone Link will be cordoned off as the book moves take place and material on the shelves in these areas will be inaccessible to readers until the cordons have been removed.

HFL move update 10 July 2012

Further information regarding the move of the HFL is now available. We now know that as part of the transfer to the Radcliffe Camera, HFL operations and services in the Old Indian Institute building will cease from  17:30 on Friday 3 August.  Collections will move to the Radcliffe Camera and Gladstone Link between 6 and 17 August; HFL staff will move soon after that.

Q. When can I access HFL books again?

In the Radcliffe Camera and Gladstone Link HFL books will be inaccessible for a short period while book movers are working in those areas. Please ask staff for assistance if you urgently need a book. The books will then be available for reference use in the first instance.

Q. When can I borrow HFL books again?

You can borrow HFL books in the Old Indian Institute building right up to 17:30 on Friday 3 August. Currently we anticipate that lending operations will resume on 3 September but please look out for further announcements or sign up to our mailing list (see top right box on this blog) to receive an alert.

Q. Where should I return HFL books to?

Readers wishing to return books before 17 August, should do so at our current location, Old Indian Institute Building, Broad Street, where a book drop service will be provided. Books returned after 17 August should be taken to the Lower Camera desk. Check out the locations or see the map below if you are unsure.

Q. Can I contact the HFL during this time?

Yes, absolutely. Throughout this time you can contact HFL staff (e: library.history@bodleian.ox.ac.uk; t: (0)1865 277262 ) if you have any questions, problems or urgent requirements. We can help you bridge this period of disruption.

Thank you in advance for your patience and apologies for any disruption.

HFL move update – this week’s moves completed

Here are the latest updates on the HFL move:

West Gallery sources & Quick Reference collections moved. The majority of the West Gallery sources collection has now been moved to the Book Storage Facility in Swindon and will not be available for some time. However, many key source materials – as well as much of the Quick Reference collection – will be added to the lending collection and material set aside for a particular Long Running Project are still on site. Work to process these will be ongoing in the HFL and may temporarily inconvenience readers. Please see staff if you have difficulties locating any particular title.

Print journals in the gallery have been withdrawn and offered to other libraries. The remaining titles are now being offered to interested library users – free of charge.

We intend to maintain normal access to the History Faculty Library up to 3 August and to the Bodleian Library throughout this period. However, there may be some disruption and noise disturbance in particular areas for limited periods. We will post additional details as dates become fixed.

There will be:

  • noise in the library
  • limited access to the second floor (reference and LCC lending collections) when the movers use the library’s back staircase.

Please ask staff if you require assistance to access collections housed on the second floor.

HFL move update 27 June: disruption to access next week

Disruption to access Monday – Friday 2-6 July

Material in the HFL will be moved next week as follows:

Mon – Wed 2-4 July: some stack collections moving to BSF.  During this time it will not be possible to offer stack fetches from collections  remaining on site.  Access to the common room may be affected.

Thur –  Fri 5-6: older duplicated and lesser used reference materials from the West Gallery will also be packed, crated, and moved to BSF.  During this move access to the Gallery floor (second floor) will not be possible as the back stairs will be in use by the book movers.  Staff will do their best to find opportunities when they can fetch books for readers

Currently, reference collections in the gallery are being selected and labelled to go to various destination. The key to labels is: pink = Long Running Project; green = lending; yellow = URR; blue = Upper Camera; red = discard.

During this process it will be necessary to make use of some of the desks in the Maitland Gallery to sort and store books while library staff update the holdings information on line. This will mean there is less working space available for readers (Thursday this week to Wednesday next).

Print journals in the gallery are in the process of being withdrawn and will then be offered to other libraries, and interested library users –  free of charge.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Staff will be on hand to assist readers as much as possible
