So long, farewell…

Today our Library Assistant for the past two years, Mary, leaves the unit library for a new job as Senior Library Assistant with our colleagues at the Radcliffe Camera! We are incredibly sad to lose her cheery and helpful presence around the library, but wish her all the best in her new post – we’re sure she will be fantastic!A wife sending her husband away on holiday in order to pursue an affair with a "nerve specialist" who has got the husband out of the way by recommending a change of scene for him. News: RCS digitisation project for the UK Medical Heritage Library

Students and researchers of history of medicine may be interested to learn about a project to digitise almost 22,000 tracts and pamphlets from the library at the Royal College of Surgeons. These will become part of the UK Medical Heritage Library, a project bringing together books and pamphlets from 10 research libraries in the UK to form a digital collection of nineteenth and early twentieth century material on history of medicine and related disciplines. The digital library promotes free and open access to resources.

Digitisation work will be undertaken by a team at the Wellcome Library in London, and will make the RCS’s collection accessible globally. The pamphlets have a wide range of subject matters, and collectively provide valuable insight into developments in surgery, anatomy and disease over the duration of the century.

A new face in the library!

Those hardy souls who have been working over the Easter Vacation at the Unit may already have noticed our new Library Assistant, but I would like to take the opportunity at the beginning of the new term to introduce Grace to readers and friends of the Library.Grace, the new library assistant

Grace comes to us as a previous Oxford Library Graduate Trainee from St. Hilda’s College Library. She can be found in Library Room One most weekday afternoons, and will be looking after the day-to-day smooth running of the library. You will also see her about in the mornings in the Radcliffe Camera as part of the Bodleian History Faculty Library team. Grace will also be the first port of call for your inquiries and visits to the Wellcome Unit Library.

The Librarian-in-Charge will also be on site on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. We are very glad to welcome Grace to bring our team up to full staffing levels once more, and I’m sure all our readers will be very glad to have her present to help them.

As a reminder, please get in touch via email in advance if you wish to arrange a visit.

Library Closure for Building Works 23 June – 4 July (incl)

This summer, the Wellcome Unit is undergoing major boiler and heating works which will mean that access to the library is not possible for two weeks over the summer.

Our last day open before these works will be Friday 20th June; our reopening date will depend on the completion of the works, but is intended to be Monday 7th July

In the meantime, we can still be contacted via email wellcomeunit.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk. The following other libraries with history of science, medicine and technology provision will also be open during the summer:
Radcliffe Science Library http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/science

Bodleian Library Upper Reading Room http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/bodley/finding-resources/rooms/urr

History Faculty Library http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/history

Please continue to visit this blog and our twitter account @WelLibOxford for updates on the works or any changes in dates.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by these works, but hope it means that we will be able to extend an even warmer welcome than usual when they’re done!
