Fund Management Activities – Another poor year

The Fund Management Activities industry looks after £4.98 trillion in FUM. It includes independent fund managers and those owned by banks, insurance companies and pension funds. It also covers alternative asset managers such as hedge funds and private equity vehicles.
The industry is expected to return to weak growth in 2012-13, after revenue declined by 1.0% in 2011-12. However, the bleak economic outlook at home and abroad and continuing volatility in financial markets will constrain gains over the year. Read the full report on IBIS.

The Bodleian Libraries want your feedback

From today until 16 November, the Bodleian Libraries will be running an online reader survey. We want to know what you think of all aspects of the libraries, from the resources we provide to the buildings you study in.

As an added incentive, the Bodleian is offering the chance to win an iPad or one of five £30 Amazon vouchers. But it’s also your chance to comment on the library you use the most (the survey will offer you the chance to indicate which library you’re answering about) and let us know how you’re finding it.

All responses are anonymous – you’ll need to enter your email address to be entered into the prize draw, but it will be removed from your answers before we see them. Good and bad, we can only make the changes you want to see if we know about them, so click the link below to tell us!

To fill in the survey, go to www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/survey or if you want to know more first, click here to read the FAQs.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Changes to library databases

We’re making some changes to the the range of databases that the Sainsbury Library can offer to students and faculty of the Said Business School.

As part of this update, we plan to replace some of our existing databases with products that can offer students and staff better and wider coverage as well as an improved searching experience. Regrettably, this will mean that our subscription to Forrester will cease. Until we are able to bring the new databases online, we recommend using Gartner for analyst reports and information about the IT and technology industries, and as ever, if you need help in finding the information that you need, please speak to library staff.

We are very much looking forward to telling you about more new databases in coming months, so please do add this News page to your RSS reader to stay up to date with all the latest news from the Library.

Pensions – Government reforms set to transform the industry

The industry has endured a turbulent and transformative five years. The global financial crisis and ongoing European debt crisis have battered financial markets for much of the period, hammering assets returns. At the same time, deteriorating economic conditions and increasing investor uncertainty have weighed on voluntary contributions. Against this volatile backdrop, the government has finally introduced long awaited pension reform. This is expected to transform the industry during the next five years, beginning with the introduction of automatic enrolment in October 2012. Read the full report on IBIS

Organic food – challenges ahead

In times where consumers are more value-conscious than ever, the overriding perception that organic produce is overpriced has undoubtedly been at the heart of its demise. But the question marks surrounding what the organic label stands for are also a major barrier. This indicates that greater transparency is needed to clearly communicate to shoppers the tangible benefits of going down an organic route. This should help to restore consumer faith in the virtues of the organic label and help to justify higher price points.
