The ranks of the world’s billionaires have yet again reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of billionaires (1,426) and record net worth ($5.4 trillion). The United States still has more billionaires than any other country, but once again the world’s richest person comes from outside its borders.

The article presents information about companies recognized by the publication for their innovative products or practices in various industry sectors, as of 2013. In the finance area, companies recognized include Square, which offers simple flat-rate credit card processing to small vendors, and Lending Club, for its expansion of peer-to-peer lending. In consumer electronics, companies recognized include Samsung, for its smart television sets and phone-tablet computer hybrid devices, and Beats Electronics, for its headphones and audio technology. Other companies listed include Stonyfield Farm yogurt company, Qcue dynamic ticket pricing company, and Songza online music streaming service.

mPowa, the mobile payments leader in the UK that launched and gained phenomenal momentum in 2012, has been named by an independent panel as a company that is expected to dominate in 2013. The company featured as part of the FinTech 50 Watchlist – a list of innovative financial technology companies throughout Europe with the potential to become game-changers this year.

mPowa, which was the first solution of its kind in the UK, enables credit card payments to be made on a mobile phone or tablet via a compact Bluetooth device. The company has gained major inroads internationally and signed major deals with partner banks and telcos to roll out its patented technology. Even since the FinTech panel met at the end of 2012 to discuss the technology companies that they expected to make the biggest impact this year, mPowa signed a multimillion pound deal with Portugal Telecom in February.

A COMPANY that produces chutneys from food waste has been named as a finalist for a new award to recognise the UK’s most promising young female entrepreneurs.

Jenny Dawson, who set up Rubies in the Rubble to create employment through turning surplus food into conserves, is one of the three pioneers in the running for the New Generation Award. The prize was set up by the champagne brand Veuve Clicquot to find female entrepreneurs with a “fearless approach” to applying their creative vision to expanding a business.
