New car sales – motoring on

New car and light motor vehicle dealers can be a little more optimistic over the next five years. Car sales are forecast to recover as economic conditions improve. IBISWorld estimates that industry revenue will grow at a compound annual rate of 1.3% over the five years through 2018-19, to reach £96.9 billion. However, the economic recovery will be slow and operating conditions in the industry will remain fragile due to market saturation and changing driving habits in reaction to volatile fuel prices. In addition, the industry faces mounting external competition from non-print marketing and advertising, and online distribution and media content hosting. Furthermore, the demand for print is being negatively influenced by a shift in some industries toward online business models. Read the full report on IBIS.

Provenance in food and drink

The horse meat scandal, which broke in January 2013, has put the spotlight on the sourcing of food, with concerns raised over the way in which meat from overseas has entered the UK food chain.

While the food industry is likely to feel the effects for some time, consumers are taking a greater interest in the provenance of their food. This is reflected in Mintel’s consumer findings for this report, which illustrate that consumers are more likely to look for products of British, local and regional origin in the wake of the scandal, with the issue appearing to have re-affirmed consumers’ faith in the quality of British-produced food.
