Brief Description

HSTalks: The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection is a collection of high-quality online video lectures lasting between 10 and 60 minute long that are ideal for teaching, research and learning. The collection includes more than 3,000 specially commissioned seminar-style lectures by leading world experts, including Nobel Laureates and Lasker prize winners. There is material to support teaching at an undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate level, and the resource is also ideal for supporting research and clinician development. The lectures are also a great resource as a helpful revision tool to do additional research around the subject.

Ollie has selected BIOSIS by Web of Science.

Brief Description

BIOSIS is a database of biological and biomedical research literature published since 1969. It not only covers academic journals, but also book chapters, meeting abstracts, technical reports, patents and other material. BIOSIS can be particularly useful to biologists as the records are enhanced with added taxonomic, genetic and biochemical information. This makes it possible to easily search for all records concerned with a specific gene or organism. BIOSIS records also benefit from the citation data available within Web of Science. This allows you to see related research available across the Web of Science platform that has cited documents you are interested in.

This is a valuable database for anybody studying or researching biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or related disciplines. A great tool for researching everything from an undergraduate essay to a journal paper.

More loanable titles in the RSL

We currently have 450 metres of books on the open shelves in the RSL collection in the VHL. That’s over 18,000 books. 93% of which are loanable.

Photograph of a room with floor to ceiling shelves full of booksYou asked for more loanable books and we did it. We recently converted 6000 books that were only for use in the library so that they can now be borrowed.

6000 books is a lot to get through so sone of them still have the old labels but our library team are working through them as quickly as they can. If you want to check if a book can be borrowed just chat to the staff at the front desk.

New Journal – Science Robotics

Exciting news for all those interested in the field of robotics we have now arranged access to a new journal Science Robotics.

What is it?

Science Robotics publishes original, peer-reviewed, science- or engineering-based research articles that advance the field of robotics. This multidisciplinary journal covers emerging trends such as bio-robotics and the use of advanced materials as well as the traditional areas of robotics. It covers micro and nano robots to large scale systems and everything in between. Theoretical and practical research are both covered and it promotes reproducibility, facilitated by online supplementary materials and design/code repositories. It covers many sub disciplines including Bioinspired Robots, Robotics for Human Augmentation, Nanorobotics and Robotics and Medicine.

New Journal- Veterinary Record and Veterinary Record Case Studies

We have arranged access to a new journal: The Veterinary Record aka Vet Record. It is British Veterinary Association’s (BVA) official journal. Containing scientific reviews, original research papers and more on a wide range of veterinary topics, it also carries disease surveillance reports, careers information and business and innovation news.

But wait there’s more, we have also arranged access to Veterinary Record Case Reports. This journal publishes articles in all fields of veterinary medicine and surgery on common and rare conditions. Cases include those that present a diagnostic, ethical or management challenge, and cases that highlight aspects of mechanisms of injury, pharmacology or histopathology.

Who is this for?

Brief Description

British Standards Online is the definitive site for all publications from British Standards Institution. The site contains bibliographic information on more than 39,500 documents covering:

  • Current, historic, and draft British Standards
  • More than 16,000 BSI adopted European and international standards
  • Technical handbooks
  • Codes of practice
  • Guidelines
  • Specifications for products, dimensions, and performance
  • Glossaries

Standards are the agreed way to do something. It could be about making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials – standards can cover a huge range of activities undertaken by organizations and researchers.

Oxford users have access to the full text of all British Standards except for wiring regulations. We do not have access to publications on the platform that are not British Standards.

Who is this useful for?

Standards are nexcessary both for theoretical research and creating practical processes and tools. There are standards on many subjects including Health Care Technology, Energy and heat transfer engineering, Image technology, and Chemical technology. They are relevant for many scientific fields including Computer Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science and should be consulted by anyone creating products or tools for practical use.

Thieme journals – consultation on subscription renewals

The Bodleian Libraries, along with all departments in the University, are under increased financial pressure and constraints.

We are faced with consistently above-inflation price rises for online journals. As a result, we don’t renew any subscription without a careful review of usage and cost. We want to make renewal decisions in partnership and consultation with our users. We want to minimise the impact of any possible cuts, making sure there is the necessary support for learning, research, and teaching within the MSD. The following online journals are now due for renewal. They have had very low usage in 2021-22.

New ejournals for MSD and MPLS

The Bodleian has been making considerable efforts to increase provision of online resources for researchers across MSD and MPLS. Additional funds were made available to us during the COVID-19 pandemic, which were used to expand ejournal access as well as provide enhanced access to ebooks.

We have been able to subscribe to a number of new titles and to purchase a range of online journal backfiles, identified via reader requests or turn-away data (attempts from within the University’s IP range to access content that we do not have access to).

We continue to take a proactive approach to the development of our ejournal collections in response to the continuing expansions in research activity and associated research outputs across both Divisions and welcome suggestion from our colleagues across MPLS and MSD. Please contact:

Thousands of new ebooks across science and medicine

We aim to build collections that reflect a diverse academic community and breadth of scholarship, and to support the University’s flexible and inclusive approach to teaching. To this end, we aim to continue to fill gaps in our current online collections, meet student expectations for 24/7 remote access to key materials, and address previously under-represented areas and revisions to the academic curricula.

Since March 2020, there have been considerable increases in ebook provision for both taught students and researchers across MSD and MPLS. Additional funds were made available to us during the COVID-19 pandemic, which were used to provide enhanced access to ebooks as well as expand ejournal access.

This expansion of ebook access included:

  • large collections from major publishers aimed at students and researchers across science and biomedicine
  • one-off purchases of individual texts available in perpetuity
  • some individual titles which require annual subscriptions

These include key individual ebook titles on undergraduate reading lists or individually requested, and also major reference works such as Encyclopaedia of the Life Sciences and Birds of the World. We have also acquired access to over 60,000 additional online monographs from the Springer and Elsevier ebook platforms.

There has also been a substantial increase in uptake of ORLO (Oxford Reading Lists Online) in MSD and MPLS, and staff have made great efforts to identify material newly available online, and online alternatives to reading list texts only available in print.

Very high usage levels are being reported for some these new titles and collections. For example, there were 8,000 chapter downloads from Berg’s Biochemistry online in just 6 months, and the big increases in downloads from our Elsevier and Springer ebook collections can be seen in these graphs:
