Hello from the Bodleian Health Care Libraries! We’re back with another installment of new books for you to explore.

In May we showcased new books on nursing and midwifery and in June we shared new acquisitions on LGBTQ+ health. This month we’re highlighting the diversity of our acquisitions, with two timely new books on climate change (Climate Change and Public Health and Turning the World Upside Down Again), as well as titles on evidence-based medicine, research methods, palliative care, neonatal care, sleep medicine, health and wellbeing and a two volume set on heart disease.

New books – July 2026

As always, you’ll find these books on display in the Cairns Library book room at the John Radcliffe Hospital for library members to browse or borrow during staffed hours.

Some of these titles are also available at other libraries, including the Old Road Campus Library, Horton Hospital Library, Girdlestone Memorial Library at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the RSL.

A new month brings an exciting new selection of books from the Bodleian Health Care Libraries for readers to discover.

You’ll find their latest showcase on display in the Cairns Library book room at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Theme: LGBTQ+ health

June’s Pride Month selection highlights books on LGBTQ+ health, including LGBTQ+ and dementia, LGBTQ+ mental health, and treating trauma in trans people.

Greetings from the Bodleian Health Care Libraries! We’re the RSL’s sister library supporting staff and students across OUH (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), Oxford University’s Medical Sciences Division and the wider University, with libraries at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Old Road Campus, and Horton General.

We’re delighted to launch a new monthly series showcasing our latest acquisitions; new library books raring to be discovered. You’ll find these new arrivals on display in the Cairns Library book room at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Theme: Nursing and midwifery

Our new books display doesn’t always follow a theme, but this month we’ve decided to focus on nursing and midwifery, in light of upcoming events such as International Day of the Midwife (tomorrow 5th May), International Nurses Day (Tuesday 12th May) and OUH’s annual nursing and midwifery celebration event on Friday 8th May. We are proud and honoured to support the nurses and midwives working at OUH.

Library events at the MPLS Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

The theme for this year’s MPLS Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) was community and to reach out and help our community the Radcliffe Science Library hosted 6 different events during 3rd week if term (12-16 May).

This was our first year helping to support this great event organised by the MPLS division but our events seemed popular and we had over 75 attendees at a range of events throughout the week. It was great to see the mixture of staff and students attending, many who were coming to the Radcliffe Science Library for the first time. Two events were particular highlights.

A Blooming Good Time

Our colleague Rodger Caseby from the of the Oxford Botanic Gardenns and Arboretum led an energising planting session. Attendees planted plugs, very young plants, into small post that they could take home with them. Many enjoyed getting to feel real dirt on their hands and the compost we used was created in part from the worries we shred in Michaelmas Term. See or previous blog for more on our worry box. It was great to be able to work with the wider GLAM community to support our readers.

Blind Date with a Book

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover can apply to books and dating so we made it easy for our attendees by covering the books. Wrapped in paper each book had a brief bio on the cover to entice readers to select them. The books chosen for the blind dates were selected form our Wellbeing and Curiosity Collections. Our attendees were allowed to select up to two books and several wished there were more! One participant said “I’ve never been to anything like this, it was so fun”.

A new book display for April concentrating on wellbeing

With exams and deadlines fast approaching Trinity Term can be a very hectic time for students and staff. It’s important to take time for your own wellbeing and many people enjoy reading literature, poetry or non-academic works as a way to take a break.

We have a wide range of titles in our wellbeing collection in the Radcliffe Science Library and have highlighted a few of them in our book display this month. Pop down to the lower-ground floor and check out our display with titles covering a wide range of topics from harnessing the healing power of classical music to escaping escaping into the fantasy worlds of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett to having a chuckle at the idiosyncrasies of British life with the irresistible humour of Bill Bryson (they do say that laughter is the best medicine…).

All of the books in the display are borrowable along with those in the Wellbeing Room. If there are any titles you would like added to the collection please contact rsl-wellbeing@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has captured the imagination of scholars and scientists for decades. The field of AI is now rapidly evolving and its impact on various fields is becoming increasingly evident.

We have curated a small book display that you can view in the break out area at the RSL. These titles offer insights into various facets of AI, from its history to current advancements, and applications in various disciplines, such as chemistry and computational biology. Other titles investigate the intersection of neuroscience and AI or examine the ethical and societal implications of AI technologies. These books are all available in SOLO.

Winter Mental Health Display 2023

We know that winter and the holidays can be a challenging time for people. Although for some people it is “the most wonderful time of the year”, this isn’t the case for everyone. It can exacerbate existing mental health issues and lead to feelings of loneliness. However, there are resources to help. We have some links below to the Student Welfare pages and the Student Counselling service. You can also pop into the Wellbeing room in the RSL and try out a weighted blanket, some knitting or read a book. We have a collection of novels, poems, wellbeing books and more in our Wellbeing collection. All of the books in the collection can be borrowed.

We have also put together a book display covering topics of mental health and winter blues. The digital display is here on our blog and the physical display is located in the Radcliffe Science Library, in our breakout space downstairs. Stay warm and take care of yourself physically and mentally over the winter period.
