Finding it hard to resist checking your phone when you’re trying to study? The Radcliffe Science Library (RSL) now has two Bricks available to help you reduce digital distractions and stay focused.
What is it?
Brick is a small physical device that works with an app on your phone. You choose which distracting apps you want to block, then simply tap your phone against the Brick to activate your chosen Focus Mode. The selected apps remain blocked until you return and tap the Brick again.

Where can I find the Bricks?
There are two Bricks in the RSL:
- Ground floor library desk
- Second floor library desk
The idea is simple: when you arrive at the library, tap your phone on your chosen Brick to switch on Focus Mode. When you’ve finished studying, return to the same Brick and tap your phone again to restore access to your blocked apps.
How do I get started?
First, download the Brick app to your phone and follow the setup instructions. Choose the apps you’d like to block during your study session, then pair your phone with one of the RSL Bricks and tap to activate it. We recommend that you allow the Authenticator App so you can sign in easily. Then you cannot access your apps until you return the Brick. Your app will pair with one of the library’s Bricks, so decide whether you want to use the ground-floor or second-floor Brick before pairing
Why give it a try?
Phones are incredibly useful study tools, but notifications, social media and the temptation to have a quick scroll can make it difficult to maintain concentration. Brick lets you decide in advance which apps you don’t need while you’re studying, while leaving your phone available as a tool for the things you do need.
