From Monday 6 September, the Bodleian Libraries will be stopping Space Finder and the requirement to book a time slot to use libraries and reading rooms for all readers. No time slots from that date will therefore be available on Space Finder. This change applies to the Social Science Library.

The Click and Collect borrowing service will also be stopping.

We will still:

  • Strongly encourage readers to wear face coverings in our library spaces
  • Request readers scan the NHS Test and Trace QR codes displayed in our entrance area
  • Encourage all library users to limit close contact and respect others
  • Maintain an increased level of cleaning in our library

World Book Day: 4 March 2021

Blue books stacked on top of each other with green paper cuts outs of countries, to represent a globe. We would like to mark World Book Day (4 March 2021) by celebrating the 250,000 social science books in our collection. These titles can currently be accessed in a variety of ways. Readers with borrowing permissions can order an item for collection via Click & Collect. Alternatively, book a study space and browse our shelves and select a book in person.

In addition, the Bodleian Libraries have a vast collection of eBooks which can be viewed remotely with your SSO via SOLO.

We also currently have temporary access to the Hathi Trust’s digital repository, which represents over 1 million additional eBooks.

Happy Reading!

New Click and Collect Training Video

The Bodleian Libraries Click & Collect service allows staff and students from Oxford University to place a request for a book via SOLO (which would usually be available to borrow). Library staff then fetch the item requested and, once the item is ready for collection, an email is then sent. Requestors are then prompted to select a date and time to collect the items:

The SSL’s collections times are Monday to Friday, 12pm – 4pm.

A new Click & Collect Training Video is now available to guide you through the process.

Although the SSL reading rooms are currently closed, Oxford University staff and students can still borrow a book from our Library. To do this, use the Bodleian Libraries Click & Collect service.

For Click & Collect, place a request on SOLO for items which would usually be available to borrow. Library staff will fetch the items requested and, once the items are ready for collection, you will be emailed and invited to select a date and time to collect the items.

Our collections times are Monday to Friday, 12pm – 4pm.

If you have any questions please email us.

How to borrow a book from the SSL

Need to borrow a book from our Library?

If you have a study space booked, you can retrieve the book from our shelves and issue it via our self-issue machines.

Browse & Borrow

You can also enter our library to select and borrow books by opting to ‘Browse and Borrow’. To do this, choose the ‘Browse and Borrow only [NO DESK]’ option when booking your study space. This entitles you to browse our collection and borrow items via our Self Issue Machines but it doesn’t allow you to sit and study in the library. Some of the benefits of Browse & Borrow are as follows:

  • It’s potentially quicker to get hold of the books you need as library staff are fetching a large quantity of books per day for Click & Collect while Browse & Borrow means you can just book a slot on the day your essay is set and pick up whatever books you need straight away.
  • You don’t need to know exactly what books you are going to borrow ahead of time, so if you don’t have a set reading list to work from, Browse & Borrow may be better suited for your needs.
  • Remember that if you just need to collect some printing or do some photocopying in the library, you can also take advantage of booking a Browse & Borrow slot.

Click & Collect

Another alternative (if you know exactly what book you want) is to borrow a book/s via the Bodleian Libraries Click & Collect service.

For Click & Collect, place a request on SOLO for items which would usually be available to borrow. Library staff will fetch the items requested and, once the items are ready for collection, you will be emailed and invited to select a date and time to collect the items.

Here at the SSL, on the days we are open, our collection times for Click & Collect are:

Monday to Friday, 12pm – 4pm.

This is an emergency interim service that enables you to borrow from selected Bodleian Libraries, including the Social Science Library.

Current members of the University can log onto SOLO with their Single Sign-On and request items that would usually be available to borrow. Library staff will fetch your requested items and then you will receive an email asking you to select a collection date and time.
