New eResource: BBC Monitoring on trial until 2 June 2021

We now have access to the eResource BBC Monitoring, which is available as a trial until 2 June 2021

This is the online platform of the branch of the British Broadcasting Corporation that tracks, translates, summarises and analyses local media sources around the world. It is an interdisciplinary resource, and its stated specialisms include: Russia, Eastern Europe, Middle East and North and Sub Saharan Africa, Latin America, Asia, Disinformation.

Two new OUP Politics eBook collections now available

Take the SSL on Holiday: Ways to access library materials remotely

Our books (both normal and short loan) are currently being issued over the vacation, all will be due back on Friday 29 January (2nd week of Hilary Term).

If you need to access library resources while you are away from Oxford, follow our tips below:

Access e-books, e-journals and databases remotely by logging in to SOLO with your Single Sign On (SSO) Take a look at the Bodleian Libraries LibGuides for further information.

SSLeReadings provides scans of selected articles & book chapters on undergraduate reading lists we support, that are not available in e-books or e-journals.

Most postgraduate reading lists are available on ORLO and scans, online article and ebooks can be accessed there.

Use the Scan & Deliver service if you need to get hold of a chapter or article from the Closed Stacks. Note that this service will not be available during our Christmas closure period (Tues 22 December to Sunday 3 January). The final date for submitting requests before our closure will be 5:00pm Thursday 17 December. The service will resume when our library reopens on Monday 4 January.

eResource Subscription Renewals: We need your views

Our subscriptions to the following e-resources are due for renewal. We are receiving an unprecedented number of requests for e-books at this time and need to release funds for these. The usage figures for the e-resources listed below are either low or unavailable, so they are candidates for review and possible cancellation. Please send any feedback to Jo Gardner (Bodleian Social Science Librarian) by Friday 15 May 2020.

Americas Barometer is a survey of democratic public opinion and behaviour that covers the Americas (North, Central, South and the Caribbean). It measures democratic values and behaviours using national probability samples of voting-age adults.

Europa World Plus comprises the Europa World Year Book and nine Europa Regional Surveys of the World. The Europa World Year Book delivers impartial economic, political and geographical background information and statistical data for more than 250 countries. The nine Europa Regional Surveys of the World offer expert analysis at regional, sub-regional and country level.

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research [ICPSR] holds the world’s largest collection of computer-readable social science data. It hosts 21 specialised collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research provides data from surveys of public opinion. The data held by the Roper Center range from the 1930s to the present. Most of the data are from the United States, but over 50 nations are represented.

World Press Trends Database is a primary source of data on the newspaper industry worldwide, comprising datasets from World Press Trends Annual Reports. It includes datasets from c.70 countries. The data is available as individual country reports and aggregated to reveal trends on circulation and readership.

 

Find our more about new developments to our eBook collections

While our Libraries may be closed, the Bodleian Libraries are working hard to ‘Keep the University reading.’ With a Single Sign On you can access over 1.4 million eBooks via SOLO.

Filter results by ‘Online Resources’ and to find eBooks that can be accessed offsite, look for the green Online access icon.

As well as our existing titles, Bodleian Libraries staff have been expanding our eBook coverage. New collections have been purchased and a number of publishers have also given temporary access to their eBooks.

In addition, for some eBook collections, the licenses of content have been temporarily extended to increase or remove the limit on the number of simultaneous users.

Want to recommend an eBook for purchase?

If you urgently require a book that is only available in hardcopy or electronically via eLegal Deposit complete a Book Recommendation Form. Staff will investigate if it is possible for us to buy an eBook which will be accessible remotely if you have a SSO.

LGBT+ Database Trials: Let us know your views

Trialling of LGBT+ Databases

Throughout February and early March the Bodleian Libraries will be trialling a selection of LGBT+ related eResources and databases, which are listed below. All are accessible via SOLO, click on the resource names below to go directly to their SOLO record and gain online access (logging on with your SSO if required).

Archives of Sexuality and Gender: Gale Cengage (On trial until 4/3/20)
This resource spans the sixteenth to twentieth centuries and is the largest digital collection of historical primary source publications relating to the history and study of sex, sexuality, and gender research and gender studies research. Documentation covering disciplines such as social, political, health, and legal issues impacting LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) communities around the world are included, as well as rare and unique books on sex and sexuality from the sciences to the humanities to support research and education.

LGBT Magazine Archive:Proquest LLC (On trial until 2/3/20)
The resource archives of 26 leading but previously hard-to-find magazines are included in LGBT Magazine Archive, including many of the longest-running, most influential publications of this type.  The complete backfile of The Advocate is made available digitally for the first time.  As one of the very few LGBT titles to pre-date the 1969 Stonewall riots, it spans the history of the gay rights movement. LGBT Magazine Archive also includes the principal UK titles, notably Gay News and its successor publication Gay Times.

LGBT Life Full Text from EBSCO (On trial until 28/2/20)
LGBT Life with Full Text is a specialised database for LGBT studies. It provides scholarly and popular LGBT publications in full text, plus historically important primary sources, including monographs, magazines and newspapers. It also includes a specialized LGBT thesaurus containing thousands of terms.  Content includes more than 140 full-text journals and nearly 160 full-text books and reference materials.  In addition, more than 260 abstracted and indexed journals and more than 350 abstracted and indexed books and reference works.

Take the SSL on Holiday : ways to access library material remotely

Vacation loans start during 8th week of Michaelmas term. Books (both normal and short  loan) will be due back on Tuesday 21 January (1st week of Hilary Term).

If you need to access library resources while you are away from Oxford, follow our tips below:

SSL eReadings provides scans of selected articles and book chapters on reading lists we support that are not available in e-books or e-journals. SSL eReadings is hosted on WebLearn, log in with your Single Sign On (SSO)

Use the Scan & Deliver service if you need to get hold of a chapter or article from the Closed Stacks. Further information can be found here.

We will be closed from Tuesday 24 December to Wednesday 1 January (dates inclusive).

(The library will close at 5pm on Monday 23 December and re-open at 9am on Thursday 2 January)

 

Box of Broadcasts: an On Demand TV and Radio Service for education

Box of Broadcasts is an on-demand TV and radio service for education. Whether you want to research current events, news from the past or documentaries, Box of Broadcasts provides a wide range of audio-visual possibilities. It allows members of subscribing institutions to search an archive of over 2 million broadcasts, record programmes from over 65 free-to-air channels, and create their own playlists and clip compilations.

Content includes BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, ITV, Channel 4, Film4, 10 foreign language channels and more.

 

 

 

15 new channels were recently added to BoB!

 

 

 

 

Use the playlist tool to create and share a playlist or to keep track of your own research.

The clips tool can be used to make handy snippets for teaching.

 

Box of Broadcasts is available to current members of the University of Oxford. Access the resource via SOLO and log in with your Single Sign-On (SSO). The first time you access Box of Broadcasts you will be required to register for an account by entering your email address and name.
