Following the Government’s announcement of the latest easing of COVID-19 safety measures on 19 July, we are providing you with two weeks’ notice of the end of the Bodleian Libraries access to the HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) on 31 July.

From 1 August we will retain access to the 4 million public domain items made available through HathiTrust and will be in a position to permit physical lending of those items which had been restricted due to the terms of the HathiTrust agreement.

Further information on the Hathi Trust and how to access titles can be found on the Bodleian Libraries HathiTrust LibGuide.

Update: Access to Hathi Trust eBooks

A close of up of a womans hands holding a tablet with an image of book shelves on it, in the background are books on shelves.Access to the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service will continue until 21 June 2021 as a minimum. Our agreement with HathiTrust will then be reviewed again in light of the easing of Covid restrictions.

To help plan for teaching and exams during Trinity term, we will aim to provide as much notice as possible (at least 2 weeks) of when emergency access will cease. Once emergency access has ceased, the physical copies of these texts would then be accessible via the libraries and we will return to our normal HathiTrust access of 4 million public domain items.

What is the HathiTrust?

This service enables on-screen access to 1.5 million in-copyright items in the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service, which have been verified as being held in the Bodleian Libraries’ collections in physical form (in addition to approx. 4 million public domain items already available to us via our standard membership of HathiTrust).

Do note that part of the agreement of having access to this vast collection of eBooks, is that if we have a physical copy of a book which is available via the Hathi Trust, it cannot currently be borrowed from the Library.

Who can access the eBooks?

This service is available for Oxford University members only.

How to access the eBooks

You can access resources directly using your SSO on the HathiTrust website:

Alternatively, you can access material using the links from existing records in SOLO (remember to sign in with your SSO) where a digital copy is available via HathiTrust (as shown in the example below).

Scroll down to bottom of the page displaying details of the book and click on the ‘Temporary Access’ link:

On the new page that displays click on ‘Check Out’ to temporarily borrow the item.

A digital, full text version of the resource will be made available to you for an hour in the first instance, though this will automatically renew if required. If you can, please remember to click ‘Return Early’ when you are done – this frees up the ebook for someone else to use it:

Further information can be found on the Bodleian Libraries HathiTrust LibGuide and at the ETAS HathiTust webpage.
