Keep up to date with the news: how to access our newspaper collections online

Want to keep up to date with world events? Want to do some research using past newspaper content? You can do both by accessing our extensive collection of online newspapers. Individual titles are accessible via SOLO and can be accessed remotely with a SSO (Single Sign On). An example of just some of the holdings in our collection can be viewed below:

Financial Times 1888 – 2016

Guardian 1821 – 2003

Observer 1791 – 2003

New York Times 1851 – 2015

Times 1785 – 2014

Note that these historical archives of the titles listed above, do not show the latest issues. To view more recent content, many newspapers are available to be browsed via the following databases:

Factiva

Largely for contemporary newspapers (1980s-). Provides essential news for the UK, America and Europe with a collection of more than 10,000 authoritative sources includes thousands of current newspapers. Excellent for national but also local, regional newspapers and specialist or professional news. There is much overlap with Nexis UK, (see below) so if you can’t find a newspaper in Factiva, then try there instead.

Nexis UK

Largely for contemporary newspapers (1980s-). Vast database that provides access to over 20,000 news sources from all over the world. Particularly excellent for UK, North American and much of Europe. Its coverage is largely current and recent, but does go back 20 years in some cases. For UK newspapers, generally covers broadsheets from 1980s and tabloids and local/ regional newspapers from more recently.
