If you are an Oxford University student or staff member and need to access library resources while you are away from Oxford, follow our tips below:

Remote access via SOLO

Access e-books, e-journals and databases remotely by logging in to SOLO with your Single Sign On (SSO) Take a look at the Bodleian Libraries SOLO Guide for further information.

Live Chat

The Bodleian Live Chat box.

For help with finding and using items on SOLO, you can also get assistance via SOLO Live Chat.

This service is staffed from Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (apart from during our Easter closure period – see below)

eBooks

Our eBook Subject & Research Guide has lots of information on how to access and use Oxford University eBooks.

ORLO (Oxford Reading Lists Online)

Most postgraduate reading lists are available on Oxford Reading Lists Online ORLO and scans, online articles and e-books can be accessed there. Take a look at the ORLO reading lists webpage for further information.

Scan & Deliver

Scan & Deliver is a free electronic document delivery service which enables you to obtain scans of book chapters or journal articles via email from the Bodleian Libraries’ print collections.

Hilary Term Vacation Opening Hours

A red alarm clock.

Our opening hours for the vacation (starting on Sunday 23rd March) are on our website homepage.

We will be closed from Friday 18th April – Sunday 20th April (inclusive)

Note that the library will close at 7pm on Friday 18th April and re-open at 9am on Monday 21st April.

Bodleian Offsite Storage Requests and Scan & Deliver Requests: Christmas Downtime Period

Requests from Bodleian Offsite Storage

The last delivery for items requested from Bodleian Offsite Storage to the Social Science Library before our Christmas closure, will be the afternoon of Friday 20th December.

To ensure the items you require arrive in this delivery, requests should be placed before 10.30am on Friday 20th December.

Deliveries will recommence in the new year when we re-open (from Thursday 2nd January).

Requests can still be requested on SOLO during the library closure period, they just won’t be fetched and processed until we are open again in the New Year.

Scan & Deliver

Scan & Deliver is a free electronic document delivery service which enables you to obtain scans of book chapters or journal articles via email from the Bodleian Libraries’ print collections.

Please note that the Scan & Deliver request form on SOLO will close at 5pm on Tuesday 17th December. Please ensure you place any requests required before the Christmas closure period by this deadline. The request form will reopen at 9am on Thursday 2nd December.

We will be closed from Tuesday 24th December 2024 to Wednesday 1st January 2025 (dates inclusive).

On Sunday 23 June our Summer vacation opening hours will begin. We will be open:

Sunday – CLOSED

Monday – Friday: 9am – 7pm

Saturday: 10am – 4pm

Hilary Term Vacation Opening Hours

The library is currently open as follows:

  • Sunday  11:00 – 19:00
  • Monday – Friday  9:00 – 19:00
  • Saturday  10:00 – 18:00

  • Friday 29 March: CLOSED
  • Saturday 30 March: CLOSED
  • Sunday 31 March: CLOSED
  • Monday 1 April: CLOSED

Stack Request and Scan and Deliver services: Downtime over Christmas Vacation

Stack Requests

The last stack request delivery to the Social Science Library before our Christmas closure will be the afternoon of Thursday 21st December.

To ensure your stack requests arrive in this delivery, requests should be placed before 9.30am on Thursday 21st December.

Deliveries will recommence in the new year when we re-open (from Tuesday 2nd January).

Stack requests can still be requested on SOLO during the closure period, they just won’t be fetched and processed until we are open again in the New Year.

Temporary changes to Library Services: 16 – 23 August

16 – 23 August, all libraries at the University of Oxford, including the Bodleian Libraries, are switching to a new library management system.

Some of our usual services will be unavailable or impacted for a short while.

  • Access to online resources will be unaffected
  • You can still borrow and return books

24 August the new system goes live. All services resume.

Scan & Deliver

Scan & Deliver will be unavailable 16 – 23 August.

Requests can be placed until 15 August. The service will resume on 24 August.

Self-Issue Machines

Self-Issue machines will not operate 16 – 23 August.

Please take any books you wish to borrow to a staff member at our Issue Desk.

Inter-Library Loans

Inter-Library Loans will be unavailable during the 16 – 23 August.

Requests can be placed until 15 August. The service will resume on 24 August.

Stack Requests

Stack requests can be placed in SOLO until 15 August.

Email book.fetch@bodleian.ox.ac.uk for the temporary staff-mediated stack request service. This operates 16-23 August with deliveries to Bodleian Old Library and Weston Library only.

Availability of Books on SOLO

SOLO remains online, but loans information will be frozen:

Books borrowed between 16 – 23 August will still appear as “Available” on SOLO.

Contact us to confirm availability of an item on the SSL shelves. Contact reader.services@bodleian.ox.ac.uk for items in the closed stack.

Changes to My SOLO

My SOLO will be unavailable from 16 – 23 August.

My SOLO Saved Favourites and searches will not be moved to the new system.

Saved Favourites and searches in My SOLO will not be moved to the new system.

Consult the instructions available on the SOLO Subject & Research Guide to learn how to export your Favourites (which you can do up until the 16 August).

SOLO Loan History

Your Loan History on SOLO will not be moved to the new system.

If you wish to retain it take a copy before 16 August.
